Another Challenge to Radio?

Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse are about to get "Cool TV" on an HD-TV subchannel. The service is describe as:

THECOOLTV is a brand new 24 hours a day / 7 days a week music television network. But unlike other music channels, THECOOLTV is “Hyper-Localized,” customizing its programming to reflect local demographics, music events and even local artists.

Two questions:

1. Will it show up on cable?

2. Will it affect radio listening?

This will have a limited, if any, impact on TELEVISION viewing in the area because it's destined to be carried on a subsidiary digital-tier channel that most folks probably won't even know about, much less sample. If it were on standard-tier service like MTV or VH1, that'd be a different story.

As far as impact on radio is concerned, it's hard to see how it can do more than have a peripheral effect on what's played on the air--and what listeners expect when they're in the workplace or thr car where most listening is done and TV can't reach.

The Wiki entry indicates WTMJ-TV Milwaukee broadcasts TheCoolTV as a compliment to Milwaukee's version of "The Lake." If Milwaukee's Lake is anything like Whethersfield's Lake, TheCoolTV there may be an ideal cure for insomnia. How much local music will the station play? What precludes a local access channel from granting a 30 or 60 minute block to a group of local musicians who present their version of a local music show? Same for a local music website. And then there's that music file sharing thingie that seems to be pretty big... Hey, isn't there an APP for that? If, as Bob1370 states, TheCoolTV is another upper tier cable subscriber service, the biggest response may be a giant yawn.

Consider, however, if there's a huge revolt against all the cable companies who are over-charging for service, and it leads to a return to OTA TV reception. Then it might be possible for the people to watch these HD subchannels directly, rather than where the local cable company gets paid to stick them. It could completely change the viewing environment, with lots of new HD channels, all for free.

Then again, pigs might fly.

I don't think it's likely to be on cable. It's going to be carried on sub channels of terrestrial stations. It's hard enough to get a non "Big 4" network on cable so unless it's sold directly to cable companies I don't think you'll see it there.

IIRC wasn't this tried already as "The Box" on a LPTV in Rochester? How'd that fare?

It was on channel 15, and if I rememember correctly, on the last days of The Box they repeated the same video over & over. It may have gone to another format, then just disappeared.

The Box did OK for a while as a channel that took requests on a 900 number and played them (I think for about a buck a play) But that model wore out. They eventually sold out to MTV Networks which turned it into a distribution channel for MTV2...then the owners of W15AL, the LPTV station carryuing it, pulled the plug and turned it into a relay for a television shopping channel of some sort. They never got cable carriage for it so it may be dead now...

I believe its life will be limited. If the station offered a different genre of music other than what's already being offered by MTV, etc., it could make a name for itself. Indy music sounds great to the bands that are Indies but most aren't ready for television. Local ads, concerts, etc., I doubt someone will want to sit in front of a tube just to hear ads... Radio does a good job of that already.

Nice name but not such a cool idea. josh 8)

Hmmm...you mean like Canada's new AUX tv? http://www.aux.tv/
(Sorry, I don't have any ratings handy...)
