Another Country Station For B'ham

> WPHT 92.5 begins April 1. Way to go Crawford.

RDP's buddy Mr. Zach (of the Alabama Broadcast Media Page) says it'll be "Positive Hit Country".

I'm not a country music conoisseur in the least, so could anyone shed any light into what 'positive hit country' could possibly consist of?
______________

To me, it sounds like a more contemporary southern gospel format.

Of course, that's just a guess.

Country songs about Jesus.

I don't think any station has ever been successful with this format, even though they've all been located in areas with plenty of both Christians and country fans. It's pretty much a non-starter because mainstream country radio stations play plenty of songs with Christian themes anyway.

This is the second go around of this format for Crawford...it was once tried out on 1260 AM I think back in the mid 90's when country was the big thing.

Wasn't that on 850? It was right after they bought the station and dropped Disney, but before they decided to go talk, IIRC.

It will fail. I don't see this new format working out. What a waste of a signal. Wish Crawford would do something totally different with it.

No, I worked for 850. We turned off Disney (WMKI) on the last day of November 1999. We brought WYDE on the air as Life Talk 850 at 6am Monday December 6, 1999. We had dead air for a couple of days before we came back on so that the transmitter could be worked on. From Life Talk 850 we transformed to Talk 850 WYDE when the new 50kw transmitter was cut on. When they moved to 101.1 they switched monikers to "The Source" as they are now. Of course, 850 could have been positive country before Radio Disney...I don't know that for sure though.

I was with Crawford in 1997 with WDJC AM 1260 primarially. It was Praise/Worship/Talk and programs back then known as Radio Bible University 1260 AM WDJC. Before that it was Black Gospel. Before that I believe it was positive country. In 1999 it became legends and the programs joined 850 and stayed with 850 when the talk portion migrated on 101.1. I believe that 1260 is still a repeater for The Source. I am not in the Birmingham area to know that for sure though.

In 1997 Crawford owned only two stations. When I left in 2001 it was three. Now they own five stations. There have been a lot of changes over there since my days, Crawford continues to grow and make changes. They aren't afraid to try something new for a little bit, and if it doesn't work, let it morph into another format. 92.5 might start as Positive Country, but who knows what it will be in a year. Just depends on its ability to generate revenue.

Isn't positive hit country mostly southern gospel with a few secular country tunes (ones that convey a positive message) thrown in? Isn't it basically southern gospel, anyway? If it is, then it sounds like it won't be much different than the southern gospel programming they're currently duplicating off WXJC. Why not just leave it "as is"?

Your guess is as good as anyone's... I did a search for "positive hit country" and came up with only one site - mine! LOL...
______________
