Another Crawford Station in the Birmingham Area Changes Formats

It looks like WPHC (92.5) has flipped back to Southern Gospel. I can't say that I'm surprised. With as many as five other country stations in the market (depending on what part of town you're in), country music on 92.5 didn't stand a chance, even if it was probably aimed more at the Jasper market.

WPHC must have just changed formats in the last couple of days or so. I found the change yesterday afternoon, too, flipping through the dial, noticing they're now calling themselves "Christian country" instead of "Positive country". I figured that WPHC's "postive country" format wouldn't last too long, either, with 3 other country stations hanging around in Bham, and with that limited class A signal. Will "New Country 97.3" be the next to go?

I don't see how New Country 97.3 has made it this long. But then again, the $64,000 question is, where would they go from here? They can't challenge either Magic or Y-94.5 with the limited signal they have; there are three talk stations in the market, and only one is doing reasonably well; and while the Q might be vulnerable if done right, again, you have the signal strength issue. It would seem to be that while the Hispanic population in Jefferson and Shelby Counties is growing, there isn't enough of a demand to take 97.3 regional Mexican.

Not a bad idea for 97.3.  Hope Cox will tap into the growing Hispanic population and bring to B-Ham, its first and only all Regional Mexican FM station. Knowing Cox, I don't see them doing that, unless there's a huge demand for it.

Now for more Crawford news.  Noticed that AM 850 was playing Praise and Worship, earlier today.  Did that station make a format switch too?  Just curious.

I can only get that station, in the daytime.  Sometimes I have been know to get them, at night, when AM does its skipping.

WXJC added the praise and worship music in place of the "Dixie Gospel Caravan" (which ran from 2pm to 7pm, with a repeat from 7pm to 5am); the "Caravan" has moved to 92.5. WXJC is still running the preaching/christian talk from 5am to 2pm as before. The praise/worship programming seems to get heavier after 6pm or so, whether that's intentional or not, or just my imagination, I don't know. The WXJC website states the "Caravan" is still being broadcast from 12am to 5am (a repeat, obviously). Could be incorrect though since that info was on the site previously.

It seems the "Caravan" keeps getting bounced back and forth on 850 and 92.5 since it got dumped off WDJC, first being as a simulcast on both stations, then just on 850 when 92.5 went through the "positive country" phase, and now being heard just on 92.5. Poor ol' Wayne Wallace probably never knows which studio to broadcast from when he comes in every day. :D
