Another Cuban on AM 530?

That was my impression in South Carolina. Null one and you null both. Of course that's more significant if you're observing that in in Florida.

Keep in mind that Guantánamo is behind the Sierra Madre range, and any skywave that escapes is going to be diflected by the mountains.

When I was in Quito, Ecuador, I could get the Guayaquil stations by aiming my loop to the south, not the SW.

Thanks, David.... Other than knowing Guantanamo is on the southern shore of the island, and in the east, I'm not familiar with the other geography aspects.

This morning before dawn, I was in the car driving I-40 across the smokies. About as noise-free as it gets. In general, conditions were not very good...especially to the south. On 530, all I was hearing on a good car radio was CIAO. I don't know if the two Cubans were off or simply absent. Cuba was present under WSCR on 670 and as R. Reloj in the mix on 950. Nothing else from Cuba was readily apparent, and Mexico was conspicuously absent.

Ironically, the path from the north was quite good. New York and Chicago both blasting in, along with others such as CFMZ, WTAM, WPHT, KDKA, WCCO, WCKY, WJR, etc.

Adding to the mix here: Last night at around 11PM EST in Virginia, 530 was silent. The AM band in general was quiet except for the usual blowtorches. Just had a major front of weather move in bringing a lot of rain, so maybe that has to do with things. I'll see what tonight brings in.

So, with all this going on, what ever happened to the 530 out of Turks & Caicos? (I must have missed something...) :p

As I recall, Hurricane Ike (2008?) hit T&C pretty hard, and I believe Radio Vision Cristiana there is running very low power. In fact, RVC is what I thought I heard before I started this thread, as if Enciclopedia cut power. Nope.

Yes, that was in September 2008. That station still isn't back?? I can't hear much of anything on 530 in the Midwest so I was unaware of this.

Update, at 7:30 PM EST I heard a guy on 530 so it must be Rebelde, and at the same time I heard a 650 from way down south booming in here in VA with a guy with a deep voice speaking to a lady in Spanish or similar before that signal becomes weak.

As to Turks & Caicos, I believe they are running flea power.

As to the 650 above, it should be Radio Progreso if a Cuban.

Now for more mystery:

Last night at around midnight EST in Central VA, I was pulling in the standard Cuban 530 with a female announcer and easy listening type tunes like usual. The AM band was pretty decent, but no out of the ordinary catches. That was after virtual silence on the AM band a few nights ago.

This morning in the car, I could barely pick up a somewhat local on 1340 and 1490, but 1480 WPWC from NoVa was booming in. WKCW at 1420, which I can usually pick up easily was no where to be found, but returned around 2:30 PM or so. This evening (it has been pouring down raining all day and all evening) around 8:30 PM EST nothing at all on 530 Khz. WSM was clear as a bell, even inside my metal building. Everything else has been spotty at best. Definitely odd.

The 650 was probably the Cuban as I heard the same programming on 660 with much weaker signal underneath WFAN.

I was faintly picking up CIAO/Toronto around 1:30pm Eastern Time here in Vermilion, OH on 530 today. Will have to try listening at night more though CIAO pretty much dominates 530 at night here.

Standard 530 Cuban with female voice and easy listening tunes again last night, and the AM dial seems to be its usual self. No distant catches, and nothing unusual. After all the weird weather we've had, I expected some good DX'ing, but this time I've been disappointed, even on the FM dial where I generally can score some pretty distant stuff at night after a major front moves through.
