Another Cumulus change - Midnight Trucking Show

No, not going away, but apparently picking up 100 nationwide affiliates, as Cumulus is dropping something called "Red Eye Radio," an ABC-syndicated overnight show (well, not ABC, but you know what I mean.) This is supposed to happen January 3. No offense to the boys, but I think this can be attributed to cost cutting and not to some overwhelming success of the "Midnight Trucking Show." "Red Eye Radio" host Doug McIntyre is being taken off overnights to take over mornings at KABC.

I thought that They were moving to Red Eye Radio and MRN was being dropped? The McIntyre had announced it and left after that night. His co-host is runing RER until 3 January when Harley and macnamara take over. RER is a Cumulus syndication. MRN is with Dial Global. Could it be with this shift that DG might pick up Bill Mack to do MRN again? And will there still be ads based at truckers with the change?

You may be right...I made some educated guesses on the existence of the Midnight Trucking show after I read the article and made that post here. Then again, the WBAP lackey who jumped on here (comment since deleted by the moderator) to put me in my place over reporting "old news" made no mention of the Red Eye Radio aspect. Also, I'm sure that Cumulus, in an effort to put their "stamp" on everything possible, would delight in killing off the MRN just to bolster their own original property.

But was McIntyre more of a Charley Jones-type, or more like the polarizing McNamara? With McIntyre's strong California base, I doubt McNamara's conservative rantings will play well there. (Silly me, I remember when the MRN wasn't even political...those were the days.)

How did MRN get with Dial-Global? I thought that was always an ABCRN thing that was first a WBAP-only thing. And yes, that'd be hilarious if Bill Mack got back on the terrestrial airwaves...but I think after doing his own thing for XM/Sirius, he wouldn't be game for working in "real time" again (overnights vs prerecorded,) let alone giving up some level of creative control AND profit, for the sake of corporate radio's structure.

MRN is absolute garbage.

The PD at one of the original ABC affiliates loathed the show, and referred to the hosts as "The two Magpies"

According to Wikipedia, ABC handed it off to Jones radio in 2005. (Better syndication arm for ROI spots). Dial Global got it when Jones and Triton merged. Bill Mack was phased out on Sirius/XM in April because they merged a couple of channels together in the realignment.

McIntyre is more a Charley Jones type (one of Jones' former producers was doing his radio show as well.) But if MRN *IS* still over at DG then who will take over? If Bill did come back its not Cumulus he would have to deal with. My question is with all the stuff running in that time and C2C being the 800 pound Gorilla now, how can the MRN get a foothold with stations?

At least Bill could be an alternative and has clout as well.
