Another Delaware Station Is For SALE!

Wouldn't be surprised. Another station Vince owned and operated or LMAed when that seemed like a better revenue idea. Even had the Geator on there for awhile.

I liked the station back when it was WKEN. Had a better than average news staff. I even spent ad money on that station in the 70's.

But it's now a station like 1260 in Newark, 1550 in Elkton, etc. It's really no longer necessary. A small to medium market can only support a certain number of advertising media. With so many choices out there: print, direct mail, cable tv, a small AMer with only a dozen or so listeners cannot attract the $$.

From what i was told by a very reliable source.. WRJE is listed on a brokers website.

Anybody want to take odds on the entire Clear Channel Delaware cluster going on the block in the next year?

Funny, I saw that last night and wondered how long it would take before anyone else noticed...
No way!! 1600 has been Urban Gospel for 9 years now.

Really? That's interesting, because last time I was down there (a few months ago) I was hearing a simulcast of Newark's 1260. Must have been a pirate...

No change in the near future, and the station is NOT for sale.

Then maybe you should get on the horn and demand answers from your associates, or, to Ted Gray, who is shopping the station (plus tower site) around to potential buyers for $325k...

Vegas Odds

Anybody want to take odds on the entire Clear Channel Delaware cluster going on the block in the next year?

It amazes me this hasn't happened yet... I'll see if we can get some Vegas odds on this in time for Friday's show...

Probably the same non profit group that owns WXXY...

Oh, I thought I should ad.. that "ad" is not old.. it's only been there a week or less.

RadioEng500 is associated with WXXY/WRJE/WAMS and just is trying to hide the truth...

It certainly was not a pirate, George. Shannon's True Oldies web site has his service listed as being on BOTH WAMS and WRJE (although he thinks WAMS is in Dover). At least for a time, the music was running on both stations, with the top of the hour id being WRJE Dover and WAMS Newark-Wilmington. They did this also with the Gospel music for a short time.

By the way, to RadioEng. Its nice to know that you know who I am. I know who I am also. So that makes at least three of us, since Mike does also. I have no reason to hide who I am, why do you?

A few years back the Dover station had the WAMS calls. Many people including Scott still think WAMS is in Dover. I do hold 33% of WXXY Broadcasting, Inc. (WXXY-FM, WRJE-AM, 95.5-Wildwood, 104.3-Lewes, 105.1-Georgetown and many more), and I can tell you again, it is not for sale. Paul, no wonder you were fired from your job, you spread soooo much FALSE information.

Who in their right mind would want WAMS, or any of the others?

Nobody's selling.
Nobody's buying.
Nobody's listening.
Nobody's advertising.

Disband the format-of-the-month club, turn the licenses back in to the FCC. You're better off with your money in the mattress.

Fred:

I may be nuts, but I have always believed that with the right format and management direction, any station can achieve a certain amount of success. Is there no chance for WRJE to succeed on any level? Just my $.02.

Glenn, I don't think your nuts. But given the current state of radio - especially AM radio - I don't think your statement is accurate.

"Succeed on any level?" That opens up all sorts of possibilities.
  • Keep costs down, serve a niche market - maybe a small but very devoted following - and stay out of the red. Maybe a small station could succeed on that level with a winning formula consistently followed (which WNRK has failed to do).
  • Go brokered: Not many listeners but you can show a profit any way. That's another standard for success that many stations have adopted (with infomercials, pay to play shows, or preachers).
  • Win some broadcasting awards and claim success despite few listeners and poor revenue; that's fine for a rich person's hobby station but not for a business.

The problem Delaware radio faces is most people can listen to major market radio from across state lines - and mostly prefer to do so. Delaware radio's response has generally been to emphasize being local and that has never worked for Delaware radio to draw either listeners or advertisers.

There was a time a radio station could hire an outrageous air personality or adopt an innovative format and lightning would strike - people would be talking about it and listening to it. That hasn't happened for a while - even in big time radio.
