Another Doo-Wop Singer Gone: Earl Carroll, 75

The Cadillacs' big hit was Speedoo but Carroll's nickname was "Speedo." Where did that extra "o" come from? Anyway, the nickname and the song came about at the same time. In 1955, the Cadillacs played at an armory in Massachusetts. Bobby Phillips, one of the group's members, saw a torpedo on display. Supposedly Carroll had a pointy head. I don't know for certain---I never met him. I'll take Phillips' comment as proof: He joked, "Hey, Speedo, there’s your torpedo!" Carroll was not amused. He said, head. "My name is Earl!" Within a few hours, they had written the song that began with "Well, now, they often call me Speedo but my real name is Mr. Earl." I bet Carroll became proud of his pointy head after that. :D

I wondered about an extra "o" and then I somehow added an extra "head" in what I wrote:

"He said, head. 'My name is Earl!"

That should read, "He said, 'My name is Earl!'" Good grief!
