Another former Nashville Broadcaster passes

John Lashlee, wore the hats of morning drive and Sports Director during his time at WLAC AM in the 60s and moved on to be the Sports Director at Channel 5 has passed away, another victim of lung cancer.
John had a heck of a delivery style and sounded like he was talking to you when he was on the air on TV or on radio.
John was my instructor in broadcasting school in 1965 and got me my first job with WLAC FM. We became close friends and I have many stories that broadcasters love to share of things including John's brother Frank, and another late friend and broadcaster from the west Tennessee area, Will Luther.
This makes two former Nashville broadcasters that have lost the fight with this devilish disease in the past two weeks.
Call and old friend....tell them how good a friend they were and share a memory.
You never know.

I seemed to remember John Lashlee doing two stints at WTVF channel 5. Back in the early seventies and then again around 1978 or so as he did sports after Hope Hines went to California. I think those time frames are correct.

As for the passing of Bill Berlin, as I said earlier, there just was not anyone who was a teenager living in Nashville in the mid to late 1960's who did not love the broadcasts of Bill Berlin. I recently saw a photo of him and that was the first picture I ever saw of Bill Berlin.

If I remember correctly, Berlin left WKDA around 1969 just a few months before the FM station launched progressive rock. Again, I could be wrong about the time frame at WKDA.

The 92.1 station in Hendersonville at that time experimented with progressive rock for a time. Funny how certain memories pop into your head about a certain DJ, but I seem to remember Bill doing live remotes from Micky Finns in East Nashville. I also give Bil Berlin credit for turning me onto the blues rock guys, John Nitzinger and Bugs Henderson. Great memories of those days. Those 92.1 progressive rock broadcasts were well received by me.
