CBS pulls the plug on WFNY (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK
FREE FM/N.Y. Stunting Into Flip
As ALL ACCESS was the first to confirm, CBS RADIO FM Talk WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK has dropped its embattled Talk format and is stunting with a montage of NEW YORK-themed clips punctuated by the phrase "today at 5" excerpted from a TV news promo. The flip occurred after OPIE AND ANTHONY's show THURSDAY; the hosts noted that they had been told to attend a meeting with GM TOM CHIUSANO immediately after their show.

A buddy who works at Free FM in Dallas says the only Free FMs left standing will be Dallas, Chicago, L.A., Detroit.

The Free FM name is being phased out in Chicago. Their website is still 105.9freefm.com and there are still some references to that name on it, but AFAIK, it's "Chicago's FM Talk Station" on-air now.

Free-FM Phoenix doesn't have much time left... and that's fine by me, what a disaster... one show is worse than the next.

It's obvious that Free-Fm's days in Phoenix are numbered. And it would be hard for CBS to ignore the lack of a full powered Hip-hop station in the market. And with Mark Waters (ex of Power 92) now at the helm........

Would the new slogan be '101.5 where hip hop cohabits'? ::)

hmmmmm....

that would render the new power totally useless and stuck to finding some other niche to fill. This could get very interesting. But does CBS have many CHR/Rhythmics in its stable?

FHF announced today that they are done in Phoenix. I don't think that is a coincidence. If they are done, the station could flip as warly as tuesday? it is a holiday weekend...

They do have a few including B96/Chicago and KLUC/Las Vegas.

Plus, there's WPGC/Washington...labeled CHR/Rhythmic, but pretty much an Urban station.

Do we need another hip-hop station? While the labels are all over the place, doesn't KISS, KKFR, KMVA share the same playlist, just one plays more of one song than the other?

I called the biz line at KZON and was told that FHF would be back on monday and tuesday. That's exactly what was said, not that they were going to be back for good, JUST monday and tuesday. That means Free FM could stunt for 24 hours on tuesday after the long weekend then flip. Makes sense to me...

I would like to see 101.5 go back to rock and the themselves Z-Rock KZON And Compete with KUPD. Dont get me wrong I love KUPD but they seem to be getting a little soft.

Can't say that I've heard much of Madonna, Jane Child, Kim Wilde, Samantha Fox, Paula Abdul, Inner Circle, DJ Sammy, Britney Spears, Color Me Badd,, Pretty Poison, etc. on either KZZP (Kiss) or KKFR lately.

Regarding the CBS-owned CHR/Rhythmic stations mentioned earlier in this thread (B96, KLUC, WPGC): these stations have been around forever. They are successful because of their heritage. I just can't see CBS launching a similarly-formatted station from scratch in this market.

The only way I believe it would work is if CBS were to acquire the rights to the "Power" name, airstaff, etc. and move the station from 98.3 to 101.5. But even then, I don't know if the station could survive another move. They've done an amazing job holding onto so much of the audience despite moving from 92.3 to 98.3...but could they do it again?

They need to make sure they keep Leykis and The Big O & Dukes show. Other then FHF, those are the only shows worth listening too. Although Big O and Dukes seem to be a little to teen oriented at times.

Maybe they flip to music and Big O and Dukes become the morning show? I have to assume they will keep leykis regardless. They have to flip it soon, if shows on their station are talking about it...

Maybe 101.5 K-Rock "The Rock of Arizona" maybe a good name for the alternative rock station.

Well I am a fan of Free FM but I know not everyone else is. I like it because its something different on the radio. Its not the same ol boring toaster talk on KTAR and its not the non stop polticial talk on KFYI. Its not the same old 12 in a row on any music station we have, its different. Yep its not everyones cup of tea but I like it.

I did inquire with allaccess today and they said phoenix is on the watch for a flip but they have not heard anything concrete yet. They also said the Free FM NY hosts only found out a couple hours before the flip so its highly unlikely anyone will know in advance.

I hope it sticks around but if it dosen't, was fun while it lasted.
