another global surprise

This afternoon Dial Global (Carl Hampton) played The Spinners -- "I'll Be Around" --- a favorite of mine since the 70's. I've never heard them play it before.

And since we're on the topic, here's one I hope they never play..............
Rod Stewart's "Your in my Heart". It just happens to be a song that I absolutely loathe, (although I like his music in general), just not that particular song.

Why so many posts on these "standards" formats playing '70s songs? I'd be much more impressed if they played songs they've long forgotten like Leroy Anderson's "Blue Tango" or Joan Weber's "Let Me Go Lover" or something like that.

Both of those are in our regular play-list at KZQX Radio. www.kzqx.com I'm a little bewildered at all the inclusion of 70's & 80's soft rock songs on many so called Standards stations. There is nothing wrong with them, but I think that's a different format, not "Standards." Maybe I'm just getting old.

"Let Me Go Lover" is on the Dial Global playlist believe it or not.

I personally wish they'd start playing some more of the '50s female vocalists again. What's wrong with playing the occasional Rosemary Clooney, Kay Starr or Sarah Vaughan tune? Or anything from Patti Page other than "Tennessee Waltz" (okay, not playing "Doggie In The Window" I could understand...) Not saying they have to make up the bulk of the playlist, but maybe one every couple of hours couldn't hurt. And Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" MUST GO - I don't hate that song, but it doesn't fit the format!

Correct! It doesn't fit the format at all. For the times that I listen, I haven't heard it played in many months.

True, I did hear them play it last year back when we had a DG affiliate. Maybe that was too mainstream of a suggestion. Now if I heard them play "Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea" by the Four Lads, then I would be impressed. ;D

Yes! I love that stuff. I think I heard them play Patti's "Cross Over The Bridge" once, but great songs like that don't get enough play anymore.

I thing the moniker 'standards' should be retired for many of these stations and replaced with an old one which fell into disuse back in the '70s or so. I'm talking about MOR.

You can also here "Old Cape Cod" and "You Belong to Me" from Patti Page on DG every so often.

Other 60s and 70s music added lately (or at least I have not heard before on DG) includes "Spinning Wheel," "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel," and "These Eyes." I also heard "Heart Hotels" by Dan Fogelberg the first time the other day, though that song fits more with their usual playlist.

A couple of adds I heard recently I really like. "Windmills of you Mind" by Dusty Springfield comes to mind. They also seem to have added more 70s-80s music by Elton John and Phil Collins.

Speaking only for myself, MOR is pretty much what my station is. I agree that the term "Standards" carries a lot of unwanted baggage that makes it sound like it is only for people in nursing homes. I'm sure they like to listen, but they don't really seem to be my station's core audience. It certainly isn't one you can sell.

A while ago I asked the question, "So what do you call it?" but there didn't seem to be any great consensus. Still, I think a little rebranding would do the format some good. If nothing else, it might make it easier to sell.

IMHO "These Eyes" (although a great song) wouldn't seem like a "snug" fit! (and I've never heard DG play it) Nor would Spinning Wheel. I've always liked "Heart Hotels" too. Are you SURE these were DG plays and not part of the local daypart on your afilliate?

I also agree that MOR would be a better identifier than standards.

Now, a question which comes to mind is what would you call a station like:http://www.avenue950.com/?

Did I make a mistake revising Wikipedia's "adult standards" article?

Of course, there were the weirdos calling Timeless Favorites standards.

I heard Timeless Favorites on Life 103.1 during that brief window when I can pick them up and not Lite 102.9 or the black gospel station in Thomasville. They were playing "Greenfields" by The Brothers Four.

I was worried last week when Dial Global seemed obsessed with the 80s, but things are back to normal now. Nothing off-the-wall, but just so much AC in what is supposed to be standards.

I guess that first one's all right. The second one was part of Tmeless Favorites.

They are most definitely on the DG playlist. I listen to a stream from KHUI and it has no local dayparts, except for a brief middle-of-the-day (morning Honolulu time) program. And they did catch me off guard, having been added within the last few months.

Plus, KZQX plays those great sounding jingles right out of the '60s, the heyday of the MOR format.

Joe Daniels, subbing today for Carl Hampton, made a point to note "the expanding music library" and alerted listeners to stay tuned for the end of the hour because "yon won't believe what I play by Elvis."

It was "His Latest Flame," which is a favorite of mine and certainly fits the DG format. But it wasn't a huge surprise, really. Nevertheless, it was an on-air acknowledgment (first I've heard) that they are making more than just the usual modifications to the playlist.

I was worried when I heard a lot of 80s music on several occasions. But they're back to "normal", and if you consider Music of Your Life played that evil Titanic song (funny, it didn't bother me as much as it used to) back when Wink Martindale was still there, they were pure standards during the time I listened yesterday morning. And almost as good in the afternoon. Until "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs.

Today was relatively normal.

"The Girl Is Mine" by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. The only good song off "Thriller". At least that's what I thought then. It's terrible!

I thought it was Al Jarreau's "Morning".

MOR evolved to AC. As such, it was basically contemporary. I don't know that the name really fits. Has anyone suggested "Adult Classics"?

I think that's what one of the Timeless Classics stations around here called themselves 10 years ago. When the name of the format was still Stardust.
