Another great 1380 DelDot moment

Coming home Saturday night on I-95 one of those electronic signs said Gold Alert, tune to 1380. So I was curious as to what a gold alert was ( I know what an Amber alert is) so I tuned to 1380 DelDot Radio and got dead air. They were off the air. 1380 was still off the air Sunday morning and Sunday night. I noticed it is back on the air this evening. So if this gold alert was important, 1380 sure wasn't any help. What a waste of Delaware Tax payers money.

"Gold Alert" is a missing senior citizen who could harm himself/herself or someone else. Authorities seem to be issuing many more such alerts lately.

Every time someone wanders away from home and doesn't report back in a few hours, a "gold alert" can be issued. And if you haven't taken your medication "OMG! The world is coming to an end!" The nanny state at its worse. And we are paying for this.

1380 may as well have been off the air. The one or two people listening for 10 minutes would not have seen the wandering Jane or John Doe.

I'm lucky my wife doesn't ask for one of those alerts every time I go grocery shopping!

Just an aside, but does anyone know why Delaware is calling these "gold alerts"? Most states that have started doing these are calling them "silver alerts." Nothing like confusing the heck out of people. I remember when Maryland started doing Amber alerts around 2002-3. The police put the words "Amber alert" on the highway signs and about 10,000 motorists thought we were under attack.

Yeah, I saw a "Silver Alert" on the electronic signs on the northern NJ Turnpike last weekend. Having never heard of one before, I surmised it was about a missing senior citizen. The silver designation makes sense for that purpose in that it's somewhat intuitive. A gold alert would seem to be about the funds that have gone missing in my 401K!

Thanks DX for the explanation. These are dangerous senior citizens they can hurt others? I can understand the concern they might get themselves hurt, but I'm not sure that a Silver or Gold alert on I-95 and 1380 DELdot radio is the answer.

jhguthlac, I hear you. Hopefully, if granny is in that bad of shape, she'll no longer be driving. So having a silver or gold alert on I-95 seems to serve no purpose. Let's face it, if granny is driving, we'll all know it pretty face as she weaves all over going 5 mph so she'd surly stick out on I-95. Of course, if she is driving on I-95 she may get herself or someone else killed due to her poor driving skills, so I guess a case can be made that granny Jones is a danger to the general population if she's driving.

It also seems a bit like Big Brother. Now citizens, alert ! The government is looking for Granny Jones of 1601 Van Buren Blvd from the city. Keep an eye out for her as we believe she is lost.

Gold Alerts are for anyone, not just seniors. They issued one for a teenager here in Sussex. If somone wanders away or is "missing" and the police are told the person may be suicidal, or may want to harm themselves, or have a mental problem...it's a Gold Alert. I'm not sure I always like them being issued.

Then why don't they just call them missing person alerts?

I guess the other question about all this is, even IF this missing person mental or not, is wandering along I-95, which I agree with Dave is unlikely, what are you supposed to do, break the law and use your cell phone to call the cops while driving?? With my luck, a cop would be behind me and pull me over and ticket me for using a cell phone while driving.
