Another Great South FM w/pending changes--101.1 Repton

WFNU 101.1 Repton/Monroeville has been off the air for several days. RECnet confirms a call letter change to WTID. I know of no noticeable changes to WYNI 930, which still airs southern gospel and Rush Limbaugh.

I don't know how 'Great South RFDC' runs it's stations in other areas, but if their Monroeville stations are any indication, they don't run them terribly well. They branded themselves "Fun 101", yet had the most sleep-inducing format of 70s and 80s fluff ever. AM 930 runs no local spots nor even brands itself. And neither 101.1 or 930 officially ID's themselves per FCC rules.

During Hurricane Ivan two years ago, 101.1 could never get back on the air to broadcast community information, nor did they consider simulcasting information from TV stations in Mobile. During Hurricane Dennis last summer, I remember WFNU not only failing to relay any local coverage, but also failing to provide any information after the storm, even with several areas in need of help from storm damage and power outages--it's boring automated format kept right on chugging along.

Part of me hopes newer, more concious owners have taken the two stations over, though I doubt it. The local owners of WMFC AM & FM (1360 & 99.3) haven't a true competitor to worry about, nor do they need to anytime soon.
______________

WHOD-FM comes in clearly like it previously did, now that the station is on at full power. That wasn't always the case, as after Hurricane Ivan they returned at lower power and/or a shorter height.

The classic rock/classic hits format sounds pretty good too, though I also liked it's former Hot AC service. Don't tell me Great South owns or operates those stations (WRJX & WBMH) too...that would kinda shoot my rant outta the water...!
______________

And the board changes

nope.... they don't own them.

WHOD, WBMH, and WRJX are all owned by the same person true enough, but not that person.

You'll soon see some additions to Bama 106 in the next month or so, as they have brought on a talented young man out of South Atlanta to do an afternoon drive, as WBMH strives to become all local.

After Bama is complete, WHOD will be next. However, listeners will make those decisions. If the programing is already satisfactory, well, then WHOD will stay just as it is. Ya never know what to expect next.

Talking about the AC format change... do you know of any rating changes since the change???

No, no, no...I knew about all that stuff (the "voices" told me).

I'm talkin' about Fun 101. Dang it all to heck (of course, you all know what I mean), you just can't have as much fun (did I say fun?) id'ing W-T-I-D, as you could W-F-N-U.

You gotta say the way they said it on the air..."double you EFFin'-You". Gotta love ol' Joe's (or did Paul name it?) whacky sense of humor.

As for WYNI, three things.

(1) It was silent for a LONG time (even the power company's meter was pulled at the transmitter), but no STA was ever filed with the Commission. It was g-o-n-e, gone...never to return.

(2) The ONLY reason it was mysteriously ressurected (no mystery, really), was the AM major change window that was opened for 5 days, back in January, 2004. At that time, the "re-born" WYNI filed to change frequency to 1190 kHz, increase power to 11kw-D, and change city of license to Harahan, Louisiana. Huh? Where the devil is Harahan, Louisiana?

Pay attention, boys and girls...this is how the great radio chess game is played. WYNI as it was/is (5kw-D @ 930 kHz, licensed to Monroeville), had shot its wad, so to speak. It was given up as graveyard dead, and that was that...no real value. BUT, as a suburban NEW ORLEANS station, it becomes a fox of a different color (you know...the one that jumped over the pine cone).

Wait...don't drift away on me yet. The FCC long ago decreed that it would NOT accept any applications for NEW, daytime-only AM radio stations, so there was no way to build a NEW, daytime-only station licensed to Harahan (or anywhere else). Any NEW AM stations had to specify fulltime operation, with a minimum of 250 watts at night. To put an 11kw-D/250w-N facility in New Orleans, I expect would've taken 6 to 8 towers (or more), located on some very expensive real estate (You've got WOWO, WLIB and the old KLIF in Dallas, among others, all operating at night on 1190).

Still with me? When a "window" is opened, FCC rules DO allow an existing daytime only station to apply for a major change (more than 3 channels up or down from present frequency, and/or change of city of license). SO, you take a "this one fell through the cracks" silent/non-existent radio station, quickly get it back on the air (pretending that it was never silent), file the application, and get a less expensive to build daytime AM into New Orleans (through the "backdoor" of some little dot on the map), WITH NO OPPORTUNITY FOR A COMPETING APPLICATIONS TO BE FILED (more or less). Check and checkmate. No, this was by no means the only situation that fractured the intention of the rules...there were many.

Of course, the proposed move to New Orleans was/is intended to take something essentially worthless (as is, where is), slap some Bondo and a fresh paint job on it, park it in a better driveway, and sell it for big bucks to a minority-programmed operator. What? Sounds like a used-car caper? Get outta here!

(3) Oops...a snag. It seems that Joe McKissick Enterprises (still WYNI's licensee) forgot to file a license renewal application on time, as required. A hastily prepared, late-filed renewal has been accepted for filing by the FCC, but no action has been taken. There's always a chance the license won't get renewed, which kills the whole deal. Also, if the license does get renewed, but the FCC does NOT grant the application to move to Harahan, it won't last long at Monroeville. Sooner, rather than later, it'll go away again.

Now then, have you learned anything about your friendly FCC? Yessir, let's crack down on that indecency stuff, make sure that gosh-darned public file is razor sharp, and that that EAS thingy is working. Be found in violation of those rules, and we'll fine you out of business.

Shut the station down for years (WYNI is only one of many...a few are much closer than you may be aware), then "bend" the rules to get a free ticket to move from a small town to a big city, and sell it for major $$$? Sure, go ahead. What we don't know, won't hurt us.

Now that's your FCC, ever vigilant, ever protective of the public's airwaves. Oh...I forgot. They ain't got time (after the indecency, public file and EAS matters) to worry about this kinda stuff. They're too busy making mega-millions from auctioning those public airwaves off to the highest bidder, making damn sure that the little guy will never be able to own a "real" radio station. Don't mention LPFM to me...it's a joke.

Well now...all that ranting has tired me out. I believe I'll extinguish the lights, and go nighty-night.
______________

Wow...!

Wow...would've never guessed WYNI's resurrection would have that much riding on it. So both the worst and the best that could happen in this radio chess game would involve 930 going off the air...gotta love the FCC.

Could it be assumed that Great South RFDC or Brantley Broadcast Associates had this plan in mind when they bought this duo (930 and 101.1, orignally licensed to become WYNI-FM)?
______________
