Another Hampton Roads AM Bites The Dust

In its heyday in the late 70s and early 80s, 1110's calls were WZAM and midday host "Big" Mac MacClellan played Southern Rock favorites from artists like Lynard Skynard, The Allman Brothers and the Eagles. It was almost an event at the end of Big Mac's shift when he played "Come Together" and ZAM 11 finished its broadcast day with a simulcast of sister station K-94, the 100,000 watt flamethrower with the 1000 foot stick in the woods in Moyock, North Carolina. Fast forward to 2022 when there was only one fate for this translator-less day timer, which protects WBT out of Charlotte. Ministry and talk WKQA Freedom 1110 ceased operations last month and I understand the tower site in Carrollton will become a housing development.

Living in Hampton Roads for a few years I recall that AM 1110 got flipped around a few times. A pure daytimer, between brokered religion and conservative talk there was not much there. The studios were in Wyndham Garden Norfolk Downtown hotel, 700 Montecello - part of the building was dedicated offices for lawyers and even WVXX "Selecta 1050" also was there. You could see the STLs on top of the hotel;

Their internet stream was up 24x7. The audio stream still appears live at : http://crystalout.surfernetwork.com:8001/WKQA-AM_MP3

An interesting side note - at one time AM 1110 was owned by the same folks who ran shortwave WJCR in Upton, Kentucky. Now , that was a money pit. Oh yes, Carrolton is the site of an old Cold War Nike facility, now a park.
