I was looking at the numbers myself like everyone else and I noticed something interesting...

For a while here, every other post was about WPEN...The LEGENDARY "Station Of The Stars," gone Rock N' Roll, gone sports.

For as much attention as the station has received in recent months I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw that it tied 990 WNTP with a 0.8.

No one ever says a word about WNTP, and I think it's a great station. I always used to listen to 1210, but now I am hooked on WNTP. (Except of course when Hannity is on.) I thought I was the only one who even knew about the station...interesting to see that it TIED with WPEN this quarter.

Either the underdog is gaining ground or the once great WPEN is a lost cause. IMHO, it's a combination of both.

Alot of people I've been talking to can't pick up PEN for the life of them.

While running a format of CCM, 990 did not appear in the ratings. Salem switched to talk, finally admitting the music format would not work on AM, and they finally make a showing. From its heyday in the ratings, often in the top ten with the Standards format, WPEN has fallen to an all time low. 990 has finally gotten its act togethr, WPEN is still in the "what do we do next" mode.

Two situations are at work here. First, WNTP has a good format, is buying a few billboards and is finally moving up after years of failure. Second, WPEN is following the trend of major market AM stations. Most big cities have three successful AM stations: all news, N/T and sports. All others either do not appear in the ratings or are in the 1 share area. NYC, given its size, is an exception, with two major news outlets and two major talkers. Philly fits the norm. KYW, of course, is the news champ, WIP is the equivalent of the FAN in NYC and WPHT is the WABC of Philly. The other 7 are in the basement. That is the fate of AM. Few people are listening and those listeners aren't enough to support 10 AM stations.

Also, when you drop Standards to go to a more "revenue friendly" format, you seldom win. WPEN won't. 1130 in NYC, WNEW turned Bloomberg WBBR isn't - it has never moved even close to the WNEW days. The message is clear. Markets will support 3 AM stations, except for a few mid-west cities.
