interesting writing...not sure i agree though. to me, i think there is TOO much urban ac on smooth jazz right now, as opposed to smooth jazz not embracing it enough. sure you don't hear mary j. blige on smooth jazz (other than on wsjt maybe), but i've always thought that was because, as bad as some of the old-school r&b sounds next to smooth jazz instrumentals, the new stuff in the genre doesn't mesh together with it at all (even that robin thicke song sounds awful on sj) and would risk losing the white half of the listening base. mixing in aaa, same deal only in reverse. i actually don't mind some of john mayer's stuff on smooth jazz, but then if you get too far into that realm you risk losing the african-american audience. why can't the solution just be embracing in-format vocalists? why is that always overlooked in smooth jazz?
