Another loss for standards

In Charlotte, NC, WAVO reaches the southern part of the market, and while it has a reasonably strong signal for an AM, it just doesn't cover everyone. And it's a daytime-only signal anyway, unless you live close to the tower.

But its simulcast partner which was covering the northern part of the market (again, only during the day) before it signed off to replace its tower, WTIX, went classic country.

WAVO has a very traditional sound, but it just doesn't cover the area.

One more detail: Dial Global has an affiliate that covers much of the area. But you run out of its listenable signal by the time you get to Charlotte, unless you have a really good radio. I've had success picking it up in the car in the city limits, though I haven't tried it in the city limits as they were in the 1980s. And in a moving car, or at least in mine where both the accelerator and the brake contribute to interference, that plus power lines probably means bad news. WAVO might be listenable in the same area with a really good radio. But when your "Lite" station is playing "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi, this is bad news indeed.

I forgot to mention I heard "You Belong to Me" by Jo Stafford. It has been years since I heard her version. Or at least I heard the xylophone-type instrument at the start. Most of her singing got messed up by power lines.

And we have had another loss. Apparently the music will continue at night and on weekends, but WKIX Raleigh, NC is simulcasting a talk station. Technically it was oldies and the station IDs and DJs had an oldies sound, but the music was a lot like Timeless Favorites in its last days with more 50s material.

Is it my car radio or does WAVO's audio really sound BAD?

A non directional 5KW should cover the area better than it does. Some of the reason might be the bad ground conductivity we have in the area.

I assumed it would be directional. WRNA is fairly close.

With another car, I could pick up WAVO in Wadesboro. That's when it was still Christian.

WRNA is directional 2 towers to take the big 1 KW away from Rock Hill. At night they go non-da with 250 watts.

WAVO meanwhile has 5KW on directional but the tables turn at night since this former daytimer goes down to 59 watts.

It would be great to have just one standards station here in Charlotte, 930 would be nice. Wait, that's been done before. It's also the reason I moved here in the first place but that was 30 years ago.

I do like to hear the good music, but it has become such an effort. However, since a lot of it is also available elsewhere, WAVO isn't as special as it once was. And that does make me wonder why I put up with all the interference.

In the parking lot at the library this time of year, I can turn on the radio without starting the car and hear "A Moment in Musical History". That's still something special. Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong recorded a duet on July 5, but I couldn't tell whether the man said 1950 or 1960.
