At one time, Lite was one of the top five stations in Minneapolis. CBS has some problems with their AC stations in markets where they were the second station to do the format... NYC, Chicago, Washington.
Actually in NYC, WWFS is doing OK. Not as well as Lite or KTU but decent in the female 25-54 and 18-49 demos. In Chicago, the CBS Fresh station is now an All-News simulcast. And in DC, Clear Channel's WASH is the format leader, having been in the format for 40 years or more. CBS AC stations do quite well in many markets such as Baltimore and San Diego.
In a market like Minneapolis, I wonder, what do people listen to at work or when they want to relax at home? It's not like WLTE has any competition. Above, Ken speculates if co-owned Jack hurts WLTE. But to my ears, Jack plays mostly Rock hits of the 80s and 90s with only a couple of songs per hour that are outside those boundaries. I don't hear much Whitney Houston or Luther Vandross on Jack. Minneapolis has two AAA stations, which at one time was a soft rock format, but again, I don't think that's true today. I suppose some offices and stores play Hot AC WSTP-FM. At one time Sunny 95 was the station that struggled while Lite was big. I guess I don't understand how Hot AC can be a workplace station, especially today when Hot AC is so close to Top 40 without rap. Even regular AC is more uptempo than it's ever been.
In Dallas, the CBS AC station KVIL has real competition from the market's Christian Contemporary station, KLTY, which is tied for #2. Clearly a lot of those listeners would be tuned to AC if they weren't religiously motivated. But most markets aren't like Dallas in its religious leanings.
In NYC and Houston, AC is #1. In LA, SF, Philadelphia, DC, Miami, Boston, etc. it's top 5. In Tampa, an old-fashioned Soft AC station playing The Beatles and The Carpenters is always #1. Why Minneapolis has so little interest in AC music is puzzling to me.
