Does anyone remember the very first song that Mix played...After the stunting Tic... Toc... Tic... Toc?

I think it was Roll With It by Steve Winwood, followed by Heart Of Stone by Taylor Dayne. Hard to believe that was 15 1/2 years ago.

Correct, just after a mock classroom rollcall of Houston radio programming executives.

The first song is correct, but I'm not sure about the second song.
I have the sign-on on tape somewhere.

I remember vividly.
I made sure I was up by 7AM that morning so I could listen.
By 7:05 I was the most pissed off 13 year old in my neighborhood, haha.

I dont get it, what was the big deal about them coming on the air ???

Some of us radio nerds like to listen to stations sign on, especially if the station makes a big or creative introduction with its sign-on.
Mix isn't on this site, but you can listen to a few format changes from Houston here:
http://www.formatchange.com/category/houston/

If you dig around on that site you may find some others that are pretty interesting.

I have it. I've been meaning to send it to the format change archive.

I remember waking up to 96.5 that morning and hearing "Hold On" from Wilson Phillips. I was pissed! For the two months prior, they were Houston's first commercial alternative station, and introduced me to some great artists (World Party, Sundays). I forgave them pretty quickly -- overall, they played a good mix of music and took some chances on non-hits ("Texas" by Chris Rea and "Show Me Heaven" by Maria McKee, for example). Now, they're stale.

I had a co-worker who was interested in the info.

The first song was definitely "Roll with It" by Steve Winwood. I too made sure that I woke up early that Saturday morning to hear the station sign on...after days of excitement building with the ticking clock noise and the promise that the new station was going to revolutionize radio, (and having loved the alternative format on the station previously) I was so excited to hear the radio station go to programming --- then VERY DISAPPOINTED to hear Steve Winwood....I mean, c'mon, who thinks that a Steve Winwood song is representative of revolution in radio? UGH.

I can't tell you what the second song was because I went back to bed. It takes a lot to get a teenager out of bed early on Saturday morning, and I still get mad when I hear "Roll With It" on the radio.

I have listened to Mix a fair amount since it signed on, but still question the selection of the first song.
