Another (mostly) Conservative Talker Fails

IT DOESNT MATTER. WE KNOW THAT COMSERVATIVE RADIO IS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY MORE COMPETITIVE WITH LIBRUL AIR AMERICAN AL FRANKEN GEORGE SOROS OLBERSSTUPID SUCKY A$$ RADIO!!!!11!!!

(the above was done intentionally)

really, that's how this is going to be spun. another run of the mill plug and play conservotalker will take its place. and i really don't know the market at all but i do know fordamnsure that a progressive talker is never going to be given a sincere serious chance, because what should happen if that progressive station *gasp* DRAWS A LISTENERSHIP? other than get blown up immediately?

Is there another larger station nearby carrying conservative talk that was competing with this Augusta station? From what you wrote, they didn't have first tier Rush or Hannity, only Beck, which implies there is another station in that market or with a strong signal into that market with Rush/Hannity that might have been getting all the GOP listeners leaving the 1K station holding the bag, so to speak. So maybe they can make money ( I don't see how) with that music format. But maybe there are enough local advertisers who'd be regular buyers of spots, because they want that sort of music station or something (like corporate underwriting of NPR and religious non-comm stations). It will be interesting to see, a year from now how this 1k station in Augusta Ga is doing going back to music from talk on AM radio.

Mancow? Rusty? No wonder this station failed. It didn't fail because it had conservative programming. It failed because it had BAD programming.

There's always Sirius and XM. Most stations from Columbia, SC can be picked up in Augusta.

Seriously, we're talking about a small market AM station that was just bought for $35,000 cash plus a note for $500,000, so we're not talking about a whopping big investment. That's less than what you'd pay for a McDonald's franchise. The new company, "Savannah River Radio", is owned by John Summers, who is moving from LA to Augusta. In the absence of details, I don't think it's going out on a limb to speculate that this could be a situation where a guy from LA wanted to move to a nicer, more relaxed place, and could afford a radio station as a hobby to play the kind of music he personally likes. Maybe it isn't. Like I said, I don't know. But it sure wouldn't surprise me if that turned out to be what happened.

Wow, all of our dreams. To be rich enough, where you could own your own radio station. Program it the way you want and not have to worry about selling any spots. Man, for a radio guy it don't get any better than that. The only thing that would make it better, I believe, would be that it also happened to do well commercially and was the #1 station in town.

WNRR, Augusta
...interesting. My first radio job ever was providing kiddie voices for supermarket commercials at WNRR Neenah-Menasha WI in 1970, when I was 9 years old...

WOW, can't believe it took this long to get the REAL story out here. Yes Mike, the first-tier conservative talker in the Augusta market is WGAC 580 AM with a rimshot simulcast at 93.1 FM. They've got Boortz, Limbaugh, Savage and a number of pretty good local (yes, local) talk programs. With their signal, coverage and lineup, WGAC is pretty formidable in the market.

But, as Vince the Slap Chop Guy says, that's not all: Augusta has another conservative talker at 1630 WRDW. That one has Laura Ingraham and Hannity. Granted, their's isn't that strong of a schedule - but it was enough to nudge the non-contender WNRR out of the picture. Perhaps they might even pick up Beck now that he's available. Their schedule could use some shoring-up.

But, in summary, WNRR was a non-factor with a poor signal and only Beck to anchor it's programming. And, in Georgia, Beck gets killed by Boortz anyway. This has nothing to do with a trend - even if the idea of one is enough to get liberals' legs tingling.

How crazy must Clear Channel be going that their 3 big shows are (were) on 3 different stations in that market?

Does CC have a station in Augusta? If not, then they've got their shows in the market, if they do, I'd agree, why not have them all in one place as they do in other markets.

From Wikipedia:

WSGF (1340 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Urban Gospel format.Licensed to Augusta, Georgia, USA, the station is currently owned by Clear Channel Communications and features programing from Salem Radio Network.

Meanwhile, 2 of the 3 conservative talkers are owned by Beasley.

Augusta is an odd market, to say the least.

It would not be the first market where Clear Channel sells shows to another operator with their own AM signal.

Hellllllo, San Francisco! CC programs conservative talker KNEW/910 AGAINST the Rush/etc affiliate, Citadel's KSFO/560.

They are likely happy they are getting more money out of Citadel to run Rush, vs. what they could sell Rush spots for on 910. KSFO is the former home of Michael Savage, of course, and sister to KGO/810.

And yes, CC had a chance to take Rush for 910 at a fairly recent contract explanation, but kept the show on 560 in a new deal.

I'd imagine these are the same circumstances keeping Rush on KSFO sister stations KABC, further down the West Coast, and WABC on the East Coast.

Rush on KABC would be a big surprise to CC's KFI, where his show has aired since the early 90's. :D

WABC? CC has no AMs in the market, and I don't think they are ready to mount talk on one of their FMs. Plus there's Rush's long history on 770, including his debut in 1988...
