Another Nail In The Coffin

With the announcement that Jim Rome is going to CBS Sports Radio in January, this means that 1130 am WDFN just took yet another nail in its coffin. Why? Fox Sports Radio('DFN'S primary programming, let's be honest) doesn't have a show from 12-3 owning the fact that most of their affiliates carry The Jim Rome Show. So my question is this: Can WDFN take this opportunity to add a local show, move Dan Patrick to noon-3pm, or add an local show noon-3pm, or are they just stuck. I have an idea, but I want to see what you think. As usual, all replies are appreciated.

I don't see a local show on the horizon. They'll find some syndicated programming to fill it, even if it has to be tape delayed.

The station doesn't warrant much attention by CC. It's on a weak frequency and they'll never dent 'The Ticket' when they have the actual broadcasts of local teams.

With the forthcoming demise of 1270 as a Talk Radio station, CC would be well advised to drop WDFN as a sports station and clear some of the the shows that will apparently be leaving 1270, like Glenn beck and Laura Ingraham.

They could clear FSR in the overnight hours.

It's what I would do in that position.

umfan, Thanks for the reply. I agree with you plenty on the idea that WDFN should look at going talk, and keep FSR at night. At this point, Clear Channel should try something new, or just sell the station. CBS Spors Radio on 1270 has a shot to do a little something due to the fact that 1270 reaches enough of the suburbs to the point where key Tigers games(at times), Red Wings games, CMU Football, and Michigan Hockey is carried on that signal, whereas WDFN's signal doesn't seem to do any of that hence, their ratings never went where they should have been. I wonder if another company owned 1130, would more of an effort be put into the station.

I'd think so, but I don't think CC could get much for it, so it will stay, neglected.

Maybe they'll give the talk idea some thought, but it will be all syndicated. AM1270 at least has two local shows.

Exactly. WDFN at its peak, when it did pretty good was local from 6am-7pm, and I remember listening to The Sports Doctors, Ice Time, The Meat Shop, and I think Sean Baligian did a show in the 7-10 slot.

Maybe Clear Channel should consider lowering the power, in particular at night, to help the signals of the co owned 1130's in Milw. and Min./St. P.

They shoehorned these three stations rather close together and raised the power on each using a very large, very directional array of towers, between 6-9 towers.

The cost of land and maintaining these stations costs a pretty penny. If listenership is so low, why now try and reduce the cost by going to lower power or less towers?

If you remember a couple of years back, the hd was shut off on these three because of the awful interference they were causing to each other.

If this station is costing more to operate than brings in, what is the point? Go omni with lower power and try and get a translator or translators to fill in.
