Another needless sitcom-to-movie remake in the works...

The story came out actually yesterday that Sony Pictures and producer Scott Rudin are working a theatrical movie based on the CBS '70s sitcom, Good Times. Phil Johnston, who wrote Wreck-it Ralph, is working on the script. Series co-creator Eric Monte will serve as an executive producer.

I don't know...while I loved the series, they should leave well-enough alone. However, who's to say if this Good Times is a success, that it may spawn other of these types of remakes--The Jeffersons, All in the Family, or others from the Norman Lear factory.

I don't know, sounds like a long shot to me. Many of the supporting casts, even some of the lead characters, have passed on. Remember the Beverly Hillbillies movie? I do, and for that reason I'm inclined to think, as you put it, "...leave well enough alone."

From a purely techncial standpoint, the movie's got to look better then the TV series. They'll avoid that flat, unappealing videotape look that, for some reason, has not aged well on Norman Lear shows (particularly). Giving Jimmie Walker, who played "J.J.", a role bigger then a cameo might be interesting. Heck, I'll bet Janet Jackson wouldn't be hard to get. She played an at-risk little girl on the TV show, now she could play an at-risk adult.

Hillarious take on Janet! I waste no love on that little snot, but I will cut her some slack for one curious injustice-- while her deceitful superbowl shennanigans cohort's star continues to soar, she appears to have paid a higher price for her own role in that breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction". But, in the context of this thread, I wonder if she would still be marketable on a reprise of that series.

Age may have something to do with that. Isn't she at least 47 now?

I don't know if she's 47, but she is at least in her mid 40s. Jimmy "JJ" Walker is in his mid 60s. John Amos, who played the dad, is in his early 70s and he is only about 6 or 7 years older than Jimmy "JJ" Walker.

Along with that Esther Rolle, who played the mom, was around 20 years older than John Amos. We've had other threads about odd age differences in actors vs. the characters they played in other threads.

I suggest checking the Internet Movie Database to figure the ages of the former actors of "Good Times" still living among us.

I wouldn't think that'll be that far-fetched to get Janet to do at least a cameo. She's been concentrating more on her acting career as of late, and her last few albums were considered commercial failures. I'm also sure that you could get some other cameos from the other surviving cast members as well.

By the way, Janet turns 47 on May 16th.

Let's hope that they don't do a "The Brady Bunch Movie" on us and start reliving moments from Good Times like Florida smashing the punch bowl or James busting up the kitchen chair into the back door and kicking in doors or J.J. overusing "Dy-No-Mite!!!" too much or making Penny's child abuse turn into a parody, etc. thinking those things are very funny. Some remakes of TV series that go into feature films should be left alone (The Honeymooners, Leave It To Beaver and McHale's Navy as examples)
