Another new Cox translator for Greenville?

Yeah, I'm sure it'll take time. Guess being in this market when something good comes along there's always the fear of losing it. (But as mentioned in another thread, even places like Atlanta haven't been safe. A complete mess down there right now)

Still enjoying the mix X is playing. Just find it strange that they still seem to refuse to play pretty much any female fronted band --like Metric or Florence & the Machine. Of Monsters & Men is still the closest. I know they're going after a primarily male audience, but these are kind of alternative staples. Even Silversun Pickups (which I realize is fronted by a male, who just happens to sound a lot like a female) is ignored. All of those are more "rock" oriented than even Fun. or Foster the People (not to say those shouldn't be in there too).

Minor complaint, but it's noticable after having listened to other Alt Rock stations.

I thought I had heard the Silversun Pickups, but that might have been on Radio 104.5 who I still listen to in occasion. I have never, ever heard Metric for sure. I think Florence & The Machine would fit in well, certainly if Foster The People and the likes can -- seems like MY played F&TM for a while after they came on but I haven't heard them played on there in ages. Again, these are minor issues when compared to the overall sound of the station, which is still very good. I'm glad they didn't stick with all of the grunge they were playing a month ago.

I like the way X98.5 sounds way more than 99X in Atlanta did before it went off the air. The Ex99 webstream will be interesting to hear, especially since they're bringing back some of the airstaff that made the station what it was in its golden years.

A few weeks ago I saw Silversun Pickups on the list of songs that had been played via the TuneIn app, but that was the only time I saw them and never heard them on air. Definately a minor complaint, just odd. Metric's "Synthetica" and "Youth Without Youth" both made the Alt charts in the past six months or so and things like Silversun Pickups' "Panic Switch" would easily fit in the mix.

Still, they are sounding good. I do agree that they sound better than 99X did in its nose dive in recent years. Also glad they greatly diminished the grunge. There's just an overall good mix of music (although I think they play the Red Hot Chilli Peppers a bit too much). As I've said in other threads, the only station that I would listen to feeling very little to no need to flip would be Radio 104.5. That said, X98.5, is shaping up to be one of the best Alt Rock stations I've heard lately, particularly since many are moving more towards an Active Rock approach. It probably takes up at least 90% of my radio listening in the car alone (less when the kids are wanting B93.7, unfortunately).

My concern is will these translators go black or change formats after the Cox sale goes through, whenever that happens? What will happen with Chuck and X98.5? That should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I was wondering about the Cox sale earlier. Still nothing on it. Chuck is doing great given the signal it's on. It should be fine, IMO. Somebody would be stupid not to continue it. X is too soon to call, but these add nothing but value to the clusters and require very little overhead.

I hope you're right. I think I'd have to commit myself if they did away with X.

X 98.5 has a full website now with a recently played list, etc.:

http://www.x985fm.com

Decent site. Playlist is a little different, but like the fact that you can search through it. For instance, I quickly found out that that Silversun Pickups song I heard on Wednesday was probably a fluke (no Metric either by the way). They have finally added M83, which is good.

Overall, they're doing well.

I listened to them for a while last night and it sounds so much better with most of the grunge gone. I honestly didn't hear a 90s grunge track for over an hour. I also heard Coldplay (I believe "Paradise") who I have honestly not heard until now.

I think they sound better than 99X did before they went off the air.

God, I hope this station survives whatever happens with the Cox sale. It just seems to get better and better and better. Almost to the point where I almost prefer it over Radio 104.5 (well, maybe not, but pretty close). That's something I never thought I'd say. I guess it's because while I really, really like the music they play on Radio 104.5 I do like a harder song here and there (and I know people on the alternative rock sub-forum tend to label Radio 104.5 "lite alt"). I don't like the hard trash they play on The Planet, but do like a little Nine Inch Nails or some of the "good" newer bands (ie., not Five Finger Death Punch, Slipknot and other pure noise).

And the balance is great. Mostly mainstream alternative -- from Blink 182 and Green Day to the Lumineers and M83 -- with just a dash of harder material here and there. They also aren't afraid to continue to play songs that "crossed over" to pop ike the Neon Tree's "Animal". It's just refreshing to have such a wide mix of new rock. And they continue to add new songs from bands I wasn't familiar with like "Anna Sun" by Walk The Moon.

I also listened for like 3 hours today doing some cleaning and think I only heard TWO grunge songs during the entire period. Again, something I don't mind hear and there, but glad they got away from playing it so much. The mix is feeling just right.

I think it sounds EXCEPTIONALLY good. I think it could pass in a much bigger market. IMO, it sounds better than Cox's Alternatives in Jacksonville and Tampa. Now, I think the only thing they could do better would be to move to 98.1 :D
I think it sounds better than 101.9-RXP in New York.

I think it's on par with Radio 104.5, but I actually prefer it because it's local. I still don't hear any female-based acts (such as Florence & The Machine and Metric). I'm just glad most of that grunge from the 90s that they were playing originally is gone. They are playing pretty much every current, and have a good library of gold and recurrent tracks. I don't really know how somebody could still listen to The Planet. Other than re-adjusting to another odd mix, they haven't had a very good reaction.

I actually like the deeper voice. The other one's not really a good voice for an "alternative", but that's just my opinion.

Actually, starting to get used to the deeper voice. I definately agree that the station sounds more like a big market alternative station (certainly those folks in Atlanta mourning the loss, again, of 99X would love to have it). I still don't quite get the adversity to female acts either. They have played Flyleaf and Evanescence. But the exclusion, particularly of Metric, is odd.

But it's a great station and hope it sticks around.

I guarantee WKZQ in Myrtle Beach plays this group.

Actually, X98.5 has started playing them on occassion as well. Still missing things like Metric and Florence & The Machine though.

Overall, with just that one gripe, I'm happy with it.

Just was looking over WKZQ's playlist since I haven't listened to them in a while and was surprised at how similar it is to X98.5. But they do have at least things like Paramore and a few 90s classics I'd like to hear (R.E.M. and the Pixies were among them). However, they also play Metallica, something I don't think belongs on an alternative station.

Anyhow, I'll take X98.5. They certainly have improved dramatically since they first started with a mostly grunge/classic alternative sound.

Didn't get back quick enough to mention it, but didn't look like KZQ plays things like Of Monsters & Men and The Naked and Famous. Quess there's always something greener on both sides of the fence.

I actually like that X doesn't have personalities. After having The Rise Guys and The Planet for so long, I don't really care for the idea of personalities on rock stations around here. KZQ appears to have a "Rise Guys" type morning show, something I definitely don't care to hear.

what about little brown outhouse and topical ointment pain? did they play those?

Nah, you might have to tune into The Rise Guys....sure they're bound to at least talk about 'em. :D
