ANOTHER *NEW* Montgomery Station

This listing was found on Doyle Haden's website:

Montgomery, AL market AM, upgrade pending...$250K

Could it be 860 WTZX moving from Sparta, TN to Luverne on 880? I don't know though, Clear Channel is the owner.

Is it 1130? 1250 in Wetumpka?

It may be WACQ-AM 1130 in Tallassee. I was talking with the owner/GM, Fred Randall Hughey, about a month ago and he said that the FCC had approved 50,000 watts...which would put him in another league entirely...

He said he was going to go for 25,000 watts and put a new tower/transmitter site between Tallassee and Montgomery, so if this information is correct, WACQ-AM 1130 will become a Montgomery market station for the first time since they signed on in 1979.

There is no CP(approval) or even an application for 25,000 or 50,000 watts... so I don't know what youre talking about..

I was only passing along what the man said. I couldn't believe that there was a 50,000 watt station approved, either..

Maybe he is moving up to 25,000 and it isn't showing up yet. Who knows? This guy has bought, built up, and sold radio stations for 30 years. He just sold off 93.9 (formerly 94.1)...before that, he sold 580 out of Tuskegee...

I think WACQ has designs on becoming "The Not-Quite-As-Big Bam" .... 50,000 watts at 1130 in an area with the conductivity of formica, and without the benefit of world-class Brennan engineering. And certainly not using one of their homemade from-surplus-war-parts transmitters (not knocking this, either; anyone who remembers 740 back in the day can recall just how far that puppy went)!

Wonder if, instead of a cannon blast, they'll use a gunshot from a .45?

Play the oldies, bring back Joe Cook, Bill J., Coby Schubert, Bobby Brennan ... and watch 'em bury today's Montgomery market.

No, wait ... as a wise man said not so long ago, this is a business, not a "fairy tale." (Damn!!!!!!!)

In any case, this is all news to me. I wonder just what they plan to do with it. I wish 'em luck.....

Funny, RW.

Those ancient WBAM airchecks have made their way into the hands of Bluewater staff...and the cannon blasts are being edited for modern-day usage on Bama Country, from what I understand. So, a public thank-you.

As for WACQ, the "Big...uh...ACQ!", I think Randall will build it up just like he built up QSI (now The Eagle in Auburn) and BIL in Tuskegee over the past few years...despite there being no record of an application on those FCC sites, he is working on building up 1130 AM to be a contender.

And it's entirely possible. There is no full-time oldies outlet in Montgomery anymore. WACV-AM 1170 plays good time oldies on nights and weekends, but since WQLD left the airwaves (and its oldies-formatted predecessor, WBAM!), oldies are hard to find in the Capital City.

WACQ's format is local talk in the mornings until 8:00, then straight rock n' roll oldies of 1964-1971 vintage the rest of the day. In Tallassee, WACQ competes with WTLS, which is an all-sports talk station down the road with a longer history in the area, having been run by the same family its entire life.

What is really interesting is that, sometimes, WACQ and WTLS are both in the press box at Tallassee games...which means, a listener is able to hear different versions of the hometown Tallassee Tigers team, depending on which play-by-play announcer you like!

Well, I know what station it is for sale.... the upgrade they say is pending.. hasnt even been filed, theres no guarentee of it being granted and the broker isnt even aware of how many towers it will take.

Mind you, if this owner whats to sell the property.. by all means, but don't sell it as an upgrade you havent even filed yet. The cost is somewhat based upon the potential upgrade, as Ive seen some of the financials and.. well, it doesnt seem to merit $250K.

What happens if someone buys it and the upgrade fails?

At least they can be found in Montgomery, if on a parttime basis. Most markets today no longer have ANY.

Great idea for a pumped-up WACQ: "AM 1130 - The Chairman" .... personality-driven standards format, like MOYL only without the Branson Bus Vacation Du Jour commercials. Sinatra, Bennett and Clooney presented with attitude.

Oy! There I go dreaming again.............. :p

BOTH stations PBP'ing the same game??? That's strange! Is anyone covering Elmore County High?

--Russell

Occasionally, Elmore County High gets coverage on WACQ, and when Tallassee plays them it is covered by WTLS and WACQ.

WTLS covers every Tallassee game; WACQ covers games that Tallassee plays within the listening area. I wonder what games are carried on WAPZ in Wetumpka?

Now that convincted child molestor Michael Rice is operating WAPZ 1250 under an LMA, Im sure theyre covering lots of games.

The application last year (2nd one) hasnt yet to be approved, but even if its turned down.. WAPZ will continue to be oeprated by Rice for 2 years.

Knowing them, I'd say Capitol Heights. ;D

Ah so, RW.

I just heard today that WAPZ-AM 1250 got all new equipment for their studio...so perhaps they are looking to improve their signal, as well. It may be the answer to the question that began this very thread!

It's NOT WAPZ, I can guarentee that as I signed the confidentiality agreement which was not for WAPZ.
