Bob,

Here is as a link to a list of Part15 compliant transmitters. FCC certified are better but they will cost you more.

Carl makes a nice antenna or you can make one from the plans he has posted.

The SStran and the RangeMaster are the most popular. The SStran will run you around $100, the RangeMaster will run you around $900. The RangeMaster is FCC certified thus the cost.

Hope this helps.

Is it worth the $800 price difference or will Carl's antenna give me the same coverage?

The SStran and Rangemaster both are designed to output 100mw. I own the SStran and acheive approximately a 1 mile radius in all directions using the load coil antenna, installed indoors, which I built using the plans from the SStran website. You can purchase the SStran assembled or unassembled. Carl offers the load coil antenna completely assembled for a more than fair price.

I am totally amazed at the SStran. If your budget is tight, this is the way to go and is completely legal. I have had my station Variety AM1630 "Good Time Radio" on the air now for nearly 8 months 24/7 with no problems whatsoever.

Feel free to drop me an email if I can offer anymore advice.

How difficult would it be to broadcast C-Quam / (GOD FORBID!!) IBOC with the SS, or would it be easier to modify Chris Cuff's Alfredo Lite to put out 100mW?

Chris Cuff already offers a 100 milliwatt version of his AM Stereo transmitter. -- JasonW

BTW, for those who own an earlier version of the Alfredo-Lite, Chris will modify it for 100mw operation for $100.00. This would include an AC adapter for those who have the battery powered version.

I asked Chris what it would take to do the mods myself but he indicated that it would be difficult because there are several components within the Alfredo-Lite that he has to replace.
