Another Oldies powerhouse gone...

WMQX, oldies 93.1 out of Greensboro flipped today to- ugh, I have to hold my nose to even say this- hot country.

Gary, no need to hold your nose. As you told me a few months back,"...your radio has both an on-off switch, and a means to change to a different station"

Oh well, as we're determining on the Greensboro posts, this may be all a stunt. Their countdown wasn't supposed to end until 3pm tomorrow. And as you so aptly pointed out, there is no TV, newspaper, news stories, etc. about it tonight, which would lead one to believe it IS in fact a stunt.

Sherlock, you're right- I did say that. My problem is... I'm a grumpy old man that's running out of stations I actually like! Fortunately for me, News Talk is my favorite radio, and music I can take or leave.

The Powerhouse is not gone. It is just reenvinting itself. Younger oldies most likely, or it could stay with county, but why... its presentation of the wolf is lackluster. If it spent 2 years as its press release says researching the format, then it would do better than this....3pm tomorrow or maybe not. They lied once.

I wish HITZ94 would go Oldies....honestly, how much longer can it go on? They could get Charlotte (which is lacking Oldies-wise), and part of the Triad. They would be insane not to...now's the perfect time!

And in 2 years as the eroding oldies audience continues to decline they'd be looking at another format. Oldies is over for a reason. They're not making any more of those listeners. Hot AC regenerates, oldies can't.

Gary, and others:
Any word on what's happening with Boomer?

I haven't yet heard from Boom. I sent him a msg via a mutual friend yesterday to call me.

One big reason oldies is over, the corporate goons and group PDs won't let a person program. Too much "in the box thinking", and burning the same 250 songs has hurt it big time. Moving newer with the lists(early 80s) will not work! An oldies station does not have to be called that! Program it just like it was 1968. They have become way to wimpified too. High energy, reverb ,etc is how it was done then. Why mold into something different now, with that lame excuse "Oh..the 55 year old crowd wants it presented in an AC style"!

Program it like it was 1968. It's like saying " I really loved the bi-planes, why don't we start an airline with those." Once again, oldies is dying for a reason. It's a 50 and over format, soon to be 55 and over, and so on. Oldies 93 wasn't even in the top 5 25-54 anymore. What they're doing now may not work and will be expensive whether it does or not. But the handwriting is on the wall for oldies. See "Music of Your Life" for details. Damn, but I do love reverb though.

AMEN, Brother! Then I suppose you approved of the sound of WWMG for the 14 years I was there. Reverb was a way of life to us (and for God's sake don't tell the clonsultant, but I had the music sped up 2.5%)

Remember, back in the 80's when the AOR's started dropping like flies, and everybody bailed and jumped on either the CHR or Country bandwagon? Then Classic Rock (same music- different name) came roaring back? I just have a gut feeling we haven't seen the last of 60's-70's top 40 music...

OH, I forgot about speeding up the music. I've worked at places where we went as high as 4%. THOSE were the days.

The oldies board beats this subject to death but I agree with you.

I like a lot of different kinds of music but I found myself listening to Magic 96 a lot before they pulled the format. It was also the only music station other than Mix where you could hear some news headlines in the afternoon. I know lots of people of all ages who miss the station.
