Another one bails from Y-101 for...

SAVANNAH!

Yep, Dustin Matthews (Fletcher?) is headed for WFXH (Rock 106-1)

Good news for Rock 106-1, bad news for Y-101. While we get somebody from a decent rock station to fix things up, Y-101 loses another! That leaves...one...jock at Y-101?

I chuckle at Y-101, Richmond's Sinking Ship. Meanwhile, some new blood is comming down here to 1 St. Augustine Place.

As much as I dislike CC and how they butchered XL-102, they got it right with the X. Make an active/modern rock station that caters to people in their 20's. Top that off with one of the best signals in the city...it's a pretty hard combination to beat! Meanwhile, their competition hemorhages workers about once a month and has half the ratings...

Speculations on a death date for Y-101?

I keep saying 6 months for the death of Y101, but it still stays on the air. Cox will end up treating it as a jockless FM except for morning and afternoon drive. Mornings will be Mancow, Afternoons will be DC's legends Don and Mike. The station will die a slow death, predicted death notice will be June 2007. It will keep Mancow and D&M and become a Hot Talk station for the FM Dial. Tom Leykis, Phil Hendrie and others come on the air here. Not like WJFK with the infomercials either on the weekends, it's going to be weekend talkers and best of the shows that air during the week. Knowning Cox though, it will stay on the air just to prove me wrong!
______________

Based on COX behavior in Tampa, they will go with only AM and PM drive jocks, ignore the ratings , call it the "New Y-101" and leave it exactly as it is. Check out WHPT and its history.

So what does Y-101 have to do to get back in the game?
Is it the music?
The Personalities?
Is the signal bad? Need more coverage?

Play programmer.... what's your thoughts...

- A broader playlist (but not obscure) to skew the audience a bit older. Why is it that I need to pay $10 a month to hear a hit song by the Dead Kennedys or the Cure...or even the occasional song by a popular up and comming band like the Dresden Dolls or Flogging Molly? Yet I hear crazy amounts of redneck-metal (sorry if you take offense) like Alice In Chains or Metallica at least once every hour or two...geez!

- While the coverage is OK in parts of Richmond, it gets hammered in the West End and in Western Chesterfield. I think either strengthining the signal would help or simulcasting with another station or two (WXJK 101.3 in Farmville and WZEZ come to mind). I know even when I was living east of Amelia C.H., NOBODY listened to 101.1 because it got shot by Farmville's 101.3

- Less of the X bashing, more trailblazing. It's obvious that it doesn't work, so be different. Face it, the X beat them at their own game. Now, do something that will work. Make it unique to Richmond...make it a station that I would want to listen to nonstop. Add some true new rock and don't be afraid to mix it up with some good alt. classics from the 80's or 90's.

- I don't think jocks are required for a good musical formula, but they certainly can't hurt. The most important thing is hitting the street. If nothing else, give people bumper stickers and promo CD's.

Basically, if Y-101 is going to survive, they need to scream, shout, and be different. I think it's obvious Cox is sticking to the alternative format, so why not make it a viable ratings contender? Why not try something different rock-wise? They have very little to lose at this point!

Radio-X...wannabe PD for Y-101 and any other tired rock station in the S.E.
______________

haven't listened since December when visiting friends, but honestly, they
don't do ANYTHING well. Maybe just doing the same thing better would help.

I've been calling the "y" frequently as of late live on the air trying to get anyone to answer their request line. After at least, 7 attempts over the past 10 days, nobody has ever answered. I use this on the air as a telling example that local radio is now being run by machines.

I tried calling the "x" but, as of this writing, I haven't been able to actually find a request number for them.
______________

Thanks. For the life of me, I couldn't find it on the the web site. I'll be calling them live on the air on Monday.
______________

Bopst, maybe they have caller ID and are ignoring your calls... Hahaha. Sorry, man... had to...

Yeah, I'd thought of that, but still, they should answer the request line, right? I mean, not answering it, plays right into the point I'm making: corporate radio is run by machines. I've had a coupla of folks do the same on their own time and they've called in to say that they get the same results so it's not just me.

I understand that is the reality of corporate radio. Regional identity is a thing of the past and, through exhaustive surveys (rigged as they are), they justify their 30 song play lists. The idea that a DJ (remember those?) actually picks the tunes played or that listeners can get their song requests played (only if they are within the already programmed programming) is not going to happen. Listeners should be aware of that.

Not that the average Joes or Janes of radio listening give a (BLEEP), but there are a lot of folks who still think radio is run something akin to WKRP which, as we can all surely agree, is not the case. A large marketing demographic is being neglected when one size fits all is the defining rule of the radio day. As always, I believe that if a radio station did operate with personality driven music programs (the merger of the successes of talk radio with music),people would respond favorably.
______________

I'm pretty sure Casey and Alyssa are live. I'm not quite sure about Crash, though.

Basically, the station is on autopilot from 12am-5:30

Crash is also live, unless he has a club night or took off for the day....like on Wednesday night's he will VT the last hour or 30 mins cause he has to be at club at 11p

Elliott is also live from 530-10 something...but the line 345-1021 will not work cause he does his show from DC 101 studios....but he gives the 1-800 a million times...I do not know it though
