WOEZ Maynardville/Knoxville 88.3 is going to christain programming on June 1. It was a true ez listening station up to a year or so ago, then they started mixing in more standards and currebt lite music. It's a non com so they should of left it a true ez station, just my opinion.
 
Yes, sad to say this is true. It was a true easy listening station until 12/26/06 when they shifted to standards. Then on 12/26/07 they shifted again. They kept the standards but added some classic soft AC hits.

But all is not lost here in Knoxville. We still have WQBB AM 1040 which is an affiliate of the Jones "adult standards" format.

How long were they true easy listening? Since they rely on listener support, I wonder if people got turned off by the new format. I listened to their Christmas programming, but didn't care for the "updated" format at all... too much stuff easily heard elsewhere on the dial.
 
I'm not sure how long they had been a true ez station. I listened via the internet for 3 or 4 years at least. Give KAHM a listen a kahm.info. It's in Arizona, but you better hurry!
 
Sorry to hear about WOEZ. When they were true B/EZ, they were good.

AOL has their B/EZ channel also a mix of true beautiful music and standards by the pop singers of the 50's and a few currents like Norah Jones (Heaven help us!). They generally make it sound as old as possible, which is annoying. But how to add vocals to B/EZ has always been a problem. Once you venture past the Ray Conniff Singers, Anita Kerr Singers and the Living Voices, you are going to anger someone.

Actually, it's about that time to roll around again for WOEZ to change formats. What format change are they on now? I count four...EZ, then standards, soft AC after that (which was very short-lived), and soon to be contemporary christian.

It's too bad that AOL doesn't offer XM, anymore. I've heard AOL's B/EZ channel, and I don't think it sounds all that great. They play way too many movie themes and showtunes on there. Not that there's anything wrong with hearing those every now and then, but after you hear (what seems) 5 or 6 of that genre an hour, it gets old pretty quickly. "Escape" is much, much better.

I'd have to agree with the person posting about KAHM, "Calm" near Pheonix. I found the stream online a couple of months ago, and it sounds great, very much like the original beautiful music format we heard back in the 70's and 80's.

in addition to "calm," i also recommend klux.org and khoy.org, both from texas. both sound like beautiful music stations of the mid and late 80s. a tiny bit more modern than "calm" which sounds like beautiful music stations of the early 80s.

Nick, had to tell you this story... A little while back I was listening to one of the Dial Global stations on the weekend and when I heard the on-air host's voice, I thought, "Great, Nick Gerard's back!" But it was Joe Daniels. I'll tell 'ya... he sure sounds a lot like you.

By the way, I know what a Sinatra fan you are. This month with all the hoopla surrounding the 10th anniversary of his passing, I picked up some musical birthday cards at the Post Office. On the front is a picture of Frank with the caption "You think things look good now..." then opens up and reads "...You ain't seen nothin' yet!" The music you hear is Frank singing "...best is yet to come and, babe, won't that be fine..."

I remember checking out WOEZ on line. While I am by NO means a fan of traditional EZ, I liked some of the material that they aired. IMO if the Easy listening format would've played more original and unique material as WOEZ tried to do on a small scale, I don't think it would've had to die the way it did!
 
Several B/Ez stations did mix in original and unique music back in the 80's, during the heyday of new contemporary instrumental music. Listeners did not like it for the most part. While I was a fan, older listeners did not go for music that was unfamiliar to them. And since the majority of listeners for that format were older, the newer music was taken from the playlist as the format continued to die.

My station used a "Beautiful Alternative" format, which included Yanni, Larry Carlton, Earl Klugh, Enya, and a host of others along with traditional B/Ez artists. It proved popular, but not with enough people, particularly advertisers.

Hah hah! Thanks, Blue! Joe's a great guy, and I always enjoyed hangin' with him at the DG facility (formerly Westwood One) in Santa Clarita, CA. He truly, honestly loves standards radio, and, like many of us, wishes there were more places to hear this great music. He did AM Drive for a while on KLAC in LA, when they were still doing standards, and he was just fantastic as an on-air host in the format. (This was before the Clr Chan "Fabulous 570" days.)

I have, in fact, gotten back on the air, not playing the standards, but in another genre I love, which is blues. I now host "Nothin' But the Blues" Saturdays from 2 til 7 PM Pacific Time on KKJZ, a public station in Long Beach, CA. It can be heard online at www.jazzandblues.org .

I truly love doin' the show, but still would welcome the chance to be on air again playing Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella and all the rest.

Thanks for the heads up on the Sinatra greeting card. I knew about the new postage stamp, but had no idea that the post office was selling Sinatra greeting cards. I hope the family is cool with that - hee hee! They're very protective of the Sinatra legacy.

I remember that era... songs like "Hymne" by Vangelis (from the Gallo wine commercial) and "Behind The Waterfall" by David Lanz & Paul Speer. If those older listeners didn't care for that newer stuff back then, I'm sure they wish they had a station like that now.

Must give it a listen. I checked out the website and from the Top 88 blues songs, the only one I know was "At Last" by Etta James. Bonnie Raitt, B.B.King... definitely blues. But I was surprised to see Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana on there. Well, I'll broaden my musical horizons. A song I always liked that I thought had a bluesy feel is "I Cried A Tear" by LaVern Baker.

WEGO in the Charlotte, NC, market is calling itself "Pure Gold". I heard oldies, though no DJs, and it wasn't timed for newscasts at the top of the hour. The Dial Global station went back to music at a time when WEGO was in the middle of a song.

WAVO is Jones standards on the other side of town (WEGO didn't reach people on that end) and WSAT is Dial Global on the north end, though you'd have to be pretty far north. What WAVO will be Wednesday I don't know yet.
