Another one gone from Clear Channel Sarasota?

I'm surprised this hasn't come up on the board yet. For some reason, I'm still on the 106.5 CTQ e-mailing list even though I've been gone for over 3 years now... But anyway I just received an e-mail that their new morning show is "Big D & Bubba" which is syndicated from WSIX in Nashville, thus cancelling the Sammi and Sammi Jo morning show. I see that Sammi Cruise is now doing middays but what happened to Sammi Jo? I hope CC placed her somewhere else within the cluster, but I'm afraid that's probably not the case. Anyone have info?

does anyone have a local morning radio show anymore????? i guess the morning crew on WSRZ is still around, but geez, that clear channel sarasota cluster has very few live bodies in the building anymore. annie sommers is there, i guess ryan rafferdy....but as for local content, they don't care....i wish they would sell.

Do you remember the episode of WKRP in Cincinnati when sales geek Herb Tarlick dreams about the future. He's sitting in a chair with his feet up on a desk, reading a newspaper and listening to the hum of the automation around him. And yes, he is the only employee!

That was the late 70's.

Will the last one leaving CC Sarasota please turn off the lights...

God I hate what radio has become...

Could anyone buy a decent even low powered am or fm, program it like we used to 20 to 30 years ago, and still make some money... maybe not a lot... but enough for everyone to have a comfortable life... serve the public interest and really enjoy what you were doing???

I so... contact me for a weekend gig... dj or news...

Later...

Walt

Walt, why dont you volunteer at WSLR? You could probably get a two or three hour gig doing free form radio and whatever you want to play. Kinda like a mini WMNF

It does still happen Walt, just apparently not in Clear Channel-land. Here in my area of Tennessee we have a locally owned two FM station cluster (AC and Oldies) which hires local people and has local programming and actually serves the county they are in very well.

Thanks MusicMan11. Do I know you by the way?

It's funny, I was just thinking, now at 106.5 CTQ, there is only ONE employee left who has been there long enough to remember the old studios next to the goat farm in Venice... and that only goes back to 2003 folks!

i remember the old goat farm off venice rd., i started doing stuff for maverick johnson on a very limited basis on the WAMR around april 2000 - football baseball for local high school coverage. Yes maps, you and i met on several occassions. i have bigger closets in my house than the wamr studio in that building.

the old location reminded me of my first radio gig at a station out in the middle of nowhere in orlando florida......i would love to find and old 'mom and pop' operation out in the middle of nowhere, have worked in every format, except country, and have a solid newsgathering background.....ah, to dream

Sammi Jo got let go the same day as Ron Miller and the others in December.

with this kidnapped woman from north port situation, it sure would helped get the word out if clear channel sarasota had a live news person giving updates.....serving the public interest?

So..why would this not work? WHY couldn't a lower powered or even medium power station AM or FM be run like it used to be done? WHY, if a station had a few loyal and motivated sales people making a better than average commission..WHY could they not make a comfortable level of income to pay a staff of motivated and interesting air talent? Nobody needs to make 90K a year..just a fair level of compensation for a live and local presentation of radio that a listener (with ears and interest) would want to hear? Is there no longer a desire to be entertained? OR has the public at large become so irritated at the concept of RADIO that they no longer even know what they are missing? OR is there SUCH a lack of compelling and available air talent that still love this business that would consider doing it for a fair and reasonable salary (perhaps one tied to the commercial revenue of thier individual shifts?) OR.. Are THEY all that gun shy? Hell I'd do it..for a lark..for fun, but there is no vehicle for this anymore. The good energetic talent are shunned as being "boat rockers" and "brown nosers". Many qualified air talent won't even be allowed in the building anymore for fear of them "stealing someone's job". Has the paranoia and daily worry over employment eroded the few who ARE employed at radio stations to the point that nobody is worthy? IS it that when someone comes in with fresh concepts and innovative, and compelling programming ideas they are immediately beaten down and told to "do it like we did in (name your market)" Why do they do that? Is it fear of lack of control? IS there anything left?

WSRZ is actually a fine sounding radio station. Technicaly they are good, musically they are very listenable, and the latest trend showed signifigant gains. Eddie Rupp is a good guy and so is Drew Thomas..a finely tuned WSRZ can be a real cash cow as long as the sales staff will leave the cubicles and superserve thier cleints in exchange for a HUGE commission. Clients will pay extra to be well taken care of, and not just called on.

And Clear Channel isn't the only company. Hey look.. It is EXPENSIVE to operate a radio station, and you should see some of the cutbacks and cost reduction going on in the smaller groups. It's kinda like going to the radio station buffet table and filling your plate with more than you can handle. Many properties get ignored, and "left on the plate" but they won't let them go, and they won't share.

I have personally tried to put on two commercial radio stations from scratch and finally gave up after so much paperwork, and proofs, and tower height issues, and FAA regulations, and liability insurance, and BMI fees, and salaries, and electricity and on and on and on just to jump into the pool and be drowned by a sea of IBOC noise and a "ho-hum, so what" attitude from potential clients, and general lack of interest in the market..coupled with violent threats from potential competitors. Nobody needs a 100 thousand dollar belly ache, and that's pretty much what it has become.

So we can dream, but after we wake up and actually face the monumental costs involved, it easy to see why this poor industry had headed in the direction it has.

But you have to understand, the fountains of wisdom in San Antone tell us that "listeners don't care to get their news from radio anymore."
Like people don't listen in their cars. Tell us 'nother one, greedsters.

Yup. We can night time news at FLA then our hypothosis is right, people don't listen.

Pay to be on a station that can't get ratings in Sarasota or Tampa-St. Pete... that's a chance nobody in their right mind should want.

The only reason brokered radio survives is guys in their 50's dreaming obsolete dreams about spinning stacks of wax on the top 40 AM station they grew up listening to. They pay outrageous rates (and for 1490, anything higher than the cost of filling a gas tank is outrageous) for the privilege of screaming "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING TAMPA BAY!" to plug their mortgage business.

1490 is no more a success than some guy in Haiti who manages to keep body and soul together burning charcoal. It is subsistence radio.

DEAR MR. SMEDGE , DID YOU READ THRU MY ENTIRE MESSAGE?LETS LOOK AT YOUR COMMENT.............The only reason brokered radio survives is guys in their 50's dreaming obsolete dreams about spinning stacks of wax on the top 40 AM station they grew up listening to. They pay outrageous rates (and for 1490, anything higher than the cost of filling a gas tank is outrageous) for the privilege of screaming "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING TAMPA BAY!" to plug their mortgage business. FOR A MORTGAGE BROKER 1 OR 2 SALES PER 3 OR 4 MONTHS OR SO ,AND HE IS MAKING MONEY ,PLUS YES!! HE THINKS HE'S A STAR ON THE RADIO...MR. MORTGAGE BROKER IS HAPPY, IM HAPPY, PERSON GETTING THE MORTGAGE IS HAPPY AND THEY BOUGHT IT FROM "THE GUY ON THE RADIO" & "HE's MY FRIEND NOW" AND MR. SMEDGE I MULTIPLY THAT BY THE APPROX. 43 SHOWS I HAVE ON THE AIR WITH MR.TRAVEL GUIDE, MR.REAL ESTATE GUY, MR.SPORTS FAN, AND OF COURSE MR. POLITICAL WACKO AND WE HERE AT WWPR MAKE OURSELVES A NICE LIVING WHILE AT THE SAME TIME MAKING MR.1950's WAX SPINNER FEEL THAT HE IS LOVED AS A WELL KNOWN RADIO PERSONALITY AROUND TOWN. HE IS "THE GUY THAT HAS HIS OWN RADIO SHOW AT 1490" WOW, SAYS MR. GENERAL PUBLIC.."I WILL DO MY BUSINESS WITH THE RADIO GUY", "HE's SORT OF FAMOUS"....AND EVERYONE LIVES HAPPILY EVER AFTER...........THAT IS HOW IT WORKS ,PLAIN AND SIMPLE...I LIKE IT....WHY DONT YOU ????? AND........IF MR. RADIO GUY IS WORTH A DAMN AT SELLING ,HE GETS HIS MONEY BACK FROM GETTING SPONSORS TO "BE ON THE RADIO WITH HIM" AND EVEN TAKES IN MORE THAN HE PAYS WWPR,THUS MAKING MONEY FOR HIMSELF....THE AMERICAN WAY !!!!!!....I CAN HEAR IT NOW.....SMEDGEY IN THE MORNING ON TAMPA BAY 1490 ,SERVING VENICE TO TAMPA BAY,HERES ELVIS TAKIN US BACK TO 1970 WITH BURNING LIVE ,80 SUNNY DEGREES ON WWPR .....GIVE ME A CALL,I CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!......ed

Hi Ed..I did imaging a long long long time ago for WTRL when it was at the pier with that cool self suppoorting tower next to the marina....Bob Barnes was the Ops guy, and the station did well..but that was in 1979 I think..Smedge and many of the others are poo-poo'ing the notion of paying to be on the air, but in many cases it is the only method that a station owner can use to keep the lights on. Especially a stand alone AM. Dave and Lola are masters at brokered programming in Clearwater and Dade City, and there is nothing wrong with it. Al Weiner is doing it on shortwave in Boston..Dave Frantz is doing it on shortwave in Tennessee.

It's the same as a vanity press where a would-be author pays to have the book printed as opposed to having a "publisher", or an independant artist makes his or her own album as opposed to having a "record deal" (which BTW in both cases is really nothing more than a loan..from a record company or publishing house where they front the money for the recording and fabrication of the book..guess what? If a certain number of books or CDs aren't sold..th ARTIST/WRITER is bound to pay back the record company or publisher for incurred costs)

In Ed's case he is offering what amounts to a decent proposal as far as one could get dealing with AM radio in Bradenton/Sarasota.

Another analogy: I don't want to OWN a copy machine..I just want COPIES.

Another analogy: I don't want to OWN a Lincoln Navigator..I just want to DRIVE one..so I rent it when I want it, and dump it when I want to drive something else.

In essence WWPR is a rental radio station. YOU or I could rent the time, and studio space etc to DO any type of show we would want without the brain-numbing headaches, and exhorbitant expenses, including electricity, licensing fees, and federal BS involved with acquiring and maintaining a station license, transmitter, tower etc. NOT a bad deal when you own your time, and can sell it as much as you want. He actually offers a good oppourtunity for somebody to give it a go. Somebody who probably can't get into a similar position at a larger corporate owned station. So why not?

WWPR's signal, at least here in s.e. St. Petersburg, used to boom in day and night when they were still 1,000 watts and tower at the pier (there was a time, when they had advertisers in St. Petersburg and i.d'd as serving Sarasota,Bradenton and St. Petersburg)......... but since they've reduced their power and moved the tower, the reception is marginal. I wish WWPR well, with the limited signal , the economy being what it is etc, they have a big challenge.

I did notice music (Oldies) on 1490 yesterday afternoon and that was a nice change; hope someone is able to do the morning drive time show, for someone interested in radio, this could help them get their foot in the door.

GREETINGS ONCE AGAIN, JEFF AGAIN HAS GOTTEN IT 100 PERCENT RIGHT,AND JEFF YOU ALSO DID THE LINERS FOR 1490 WHEN IT WAS WKLV IN ABOUT 1989......AS FOR MUSICMAN & DRT...WHAT RADIO ARE YOU FOLKS USING? THEY WRITE .....WWPR's signal, at least here in s.e. St. Petersburg, used to boom in day and night when they were still 1,000 watts and tower at the pier (there was a time, when they had advertisers in St. Petersburg and i.d'd as serving Sarasota,Bradenton and St. Petersburg)......... but since they've reduced their power and moved the tower, the reception is marginal. i live across the manatee river
THE SIGNAL ABOUT A YEAR AGO WAS NOT WHAT IT ONCE WAS, WE HAVE MADE SOME ADJUSTMENTS MOSTLY IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS THAT HAVE MADE OUR SIGNAL STRONG......YESTERDAY TUESDAY JAN. 22ND VAL DROPPED OF ONE OF OUR RADIO HOSTS AT TAMPA AIRPORT AT AROUND 9AM AND WAS HEARING THE STATION CLEARLY DRIVING DOWN DALE MABRY,.......AT 3:20 PM A CALLER CALLED A SHOW AND SAID "IM LISTENING TO YOU IN OSPREY"...... I ALWAYS GET A STRONG SIGNAL AS I DRIVE TO THE DOME TO COVER A RAYS GAME....SO , IM NOT SURE WHY YOUR RECEPTION IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT SHOULD BE IN YOUR AREA.... hope someone is able to do the morning drive time show, for someone interested in radio, this could help them get their foot in the door. .BY THE WAY..... MY MORNING GUY WAS NOT AMUSED REGARDING MY POST HERE AND CHOOSE TO RIP ME A NEW ONE ON THE AIR YESTERDAY MORNING,FIRST...... AS I TOLD HIM ,I WAS PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE IN THE EVENT HE CONTINUED TO HAVE PROBLEMS GETTING HIS SHOW FULLY SPONSORED ,NOTHING WAS IMMEDIATE,AND AS LONG AS THE SHOW STAYS FULLY SPONSORED HE COULD STAY FOREVER....JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.......IF YOU DONT PAY,YOU DONT PLAY....AND ALSO,LATE AFTERNOON DRIVETIME IS AVAILABLE,.....I RECIEVED A NUMBER OF PHONE CALLS WITHIN A HALF HOUR OF THE "ON AIR" DISCUSSION , BUT WASNT IT REFRESHING AND IM SURE "ENTERTAINING" TO SOME THAT WE HAD OUR LITTLE "TIFF" ON THE AIR AND HE FEELS LIKE HE DOES,I MADE MY POINT, AND WE CONTINUE.WERE ELSE ON RADIO WILL YOU FIND THAT,NO ONE IS GETTING FIRED, MANAGEMENT (ME) IS NOT ANGRY,NO ONE IS GETTING FIRED, AND HOPEFULLY HE STAYS FULLY SPONSORED AND STAYS ON WWPR.THIS IS A BUSSINESS FOLKS,PLANNING AHEAD ETC. IS JUST PART OF IT........ed
