You are all correct in your discussions. I was the host of an evening smooth/urban jazz show on KORL 101.1 from Jan through Mar of 2008. I ran the show as an independent and had an agreement with the station's owner George Hochman to split advertising $$ for my airtime. It was the only Hawaii-based jazz show with actual interviews, etc. I interviewed Jim Brickman when he was in town for his February concerts. It was very difficult to selling the advertising as most folks were confused about the the station format of Japanese programming, talk with Roy Dacherman, etc. Besides programming my own songs (as the existing playlist was crap), I also put together the media kit. I provided all of that info to George, along with a laundry list of improvements to his station manager. Johnny Miro.
My agreement was cancelled at the end of March, and subsequently KORL 101.1 turned to full time smooth jazz on April 1. I was not asked to continue my show. Hochman hired a sales manager in April whose focus was to sell KORL FM's airtime. Guess it was a lot easier with the media kit I designed. I was contacted in August to be a salesperson - an insult.
KORL FM will never get it together until they are ready to make a commitment to programming & air talent. It is only about the $$, not a love for the music as Hochman has told me before that he is indifferent to the music format. I wasn't until I put together the media kit, that they got the idea that smooth jazz has an audience in Hawai'i. Miro's selections of music are too ethereal and obscure for this format. He doesn't have a sense of what goes into a strong jazz music mix, which is why it is so much more comfortable to take the feed. Hochman also doesn't believe in streaming or maintaining an FM website, since he says it costs too much. Maybe your advertisers and potential listeners wouldn't think so.
It is unfortunate that Hawai'i will never be a player in the smooth/urban jazz market. Which is so ridiculous, since we have the market demographic and $$ to support it. I have always loved 94.7 The Wave and only have the best memories of listening to the Wave and SF's 103.7. I had really hoped to bring Hawai'i into that game, so much so that I invested $5,000 of my personal savings to get there. I even pitched Austin Vali to do a weekend jazz show in early 2007. I quit my job at the start of this year to make KORL FM a full time commitment (I'm still unemployed). So, disappointing that I was the only one at that station committed to content.
Here are my links below just you know I'm not a poser. The top link is a sample aircheck, the 2nd is my blog, the 3rd is a sample of my playlists.
