Another one out at 3/5

Kim Powell is leaving Arizona's Family, after 4 years with the stations. She doesn't say she was outright fired, but when she says things like this: “Somewhere along the way, I was told to reevaluate my goals,” she says in the posts. “I just wasn’t enough. I didn’t have ‘it.’ This broke my heart more than I can explain," it doesn't sound like she's leaving voluntarily.

Hopefully she'll land on her feet. She was one of their best reporters, although a so-so news anchor.

I thought highly of Kim as well. I just cannot imagine what Gray/Mgmt is looking for or looking to accomplish.
If I were in the profession, I'd steer very far away from any position with Gray.......
If I was working for Gray, I'd have my resume updated, ready and waiting in the wings.....

It looks to me that Gray might be mandating anchor experience for all on-air news personnel. If you're not great at it (for example, Monica Garcia and Kim Powell), you're gone no matter how good a reporter you are. Do they do this in other markets? It might make sense for their stations in smaller markets with smaller news staffs, but not in a major market like Phoenix.

I totally agree with your statement. However, from the journalist's point of view, there is a lot of pressure to "become" an anchor. Monica and Kim were good at reporting, but not so good at anchoring (although I would argue that Kim is as good as Emma on weekend evenings). It's a shame that solid reporters can't just be solid reporters and compensated well.

Kim had grown on me as an on air talent, and she appeared to be a reasonably competent reporter. If it’s cost cutting the station was looking for, there would be a lot of bloated salaries they could have cut instead of her.
The 'bloated salaries' always seem to have the connections to ensure they remain until the whole ship sinks.

Given the right latitude a good reporter is worth much more than an anchor (news reader with good teeth and hair).

I'm shocked. I want to say I saw Kim on Monday evening filing a report. Agree with above: was just okay at weather, was a so-so anchor, and I thought a good field reporter. As of right now, Kim's bio is still up on AZFamily website.

The comment “somewhere along the way, I was told to reevaluate my goals” is tough. I supervisor people and sometimes you have to have those types of conversations. When I was in the Air Force and worked at a school, the Commander would tell all new students on the first day that this job is not for everyone and if you don't make it through the course, do not feel bad about it.

I don't know who left at 3/5 has a "bloated" salary. I'm thinking possibly Scott Pasmore, but I don't think they want to cut Scott.

It seems that, if you can get a reporter job that specialized in something, you can probably get rewarded for doing that job well. I'm thinking investigative, consumer, health, education, etc. But ordinary beat reporters are not as well compensated or appreciated these days. Hence, gray haired beat reporters are few and far between these days. As an example, when I first got here, 12 News had a number of older reporters. Then, there was the "purge" to save money. Now, most of their reporters are younger.

Passmore, plus Royal and Sean. I see some retirements in the future, when all three men's contracts are up. They're all getting up there in years.

Royal is nearly retirement age. I assumed that Sean would be taking his place with Paul being the secondary pm weather anchor.

I guess you don't know that Sean is actually older than Royal (67 vs 66) with Pasmore being the baby at 61.
I thought someone said on a thread here that Sean was in his late 50's. If that was incorrect, then I admit I have no first hand knowledge of anyone's age except Pasmore (GMAZ announced his 60th birthday).

I went back and read the Monica Garcia post and thread. It came across is one of her reasons for no longer working at Gray had to do with her salary. Remember that Monica and Kim had similar paths at 3TV: field reporting, weekend evening weather, weekend co-anchor and back to field reporting. So either they were given the assignments and tried to make it work or asked for the assignments and it didn't work.

I would be shocked if Sean is actually 67. This article about Sean is undated but indicates that he was 42 at time, and his daughter was 5. He recently mentioned dropping his daughter off at college. So if she is 18 now, that would mean the article is 13 years old. So Sean would be 42+13=55 which is around what I would expect. Yes a Google search shows some sketchy looking sites that say he's 67. Hmmm...

Thanks, Derek, for doing the research! I thought someone said Sean was 55 or 56, but I didn't remember how long ago that was. I trust your research more than some sketchy website.

Kim Powell had a powerful field assignment for KTVK / KPHO back a couple of years ago. Powell followed the crazy woman & man that had her own little children murdered into Idaho. I recall Powell being thoroughly investigative and keeping the story, comprehensible.
I believe she returned back to Phoenix and then traveled back again when the bodies were discovered.
Kim Powell is a consummate professional journalist. She will be a success wherever she lands.

And now, just as the story is making headlines again, Kim is gone. ☹ Maybe they'll send Emma to cover it.
