Another out at WFMS

Just saw on Indianaairwaves.com that Darren Tandy got sacked at FMS  What is going on at that place??

Tandy out at WFMS

Darren Tandy is the latest victim of the Cumulus cuts. He was let go this morning from his 7pm to 12 am "Country Loving" shift. Darren had been with Susquehana/Cumulus for 16 years, and has been in radio for 25 years. He is being replaced by a syndicated Cumulus product that is airing live from Nashville each weeknight. Rumor is that former OM Bob Richards was told to fire Tandy and another staffer last week, and he told Cumulus "No way" and that is why he tendered his resignation. DT will surely be missed in the Indy market, he is one of the great ones.

I think the phenomenon is called "Cumulus".

Re: Tandy out at WFMS

Man I hate to hear that...I worked with his step dad Warren Matouk at WCSI in the late 70's & met Darren back then. Even at age 10, he had a voice that had 'radio' all over it. And a nicer guy there isn't it. The pride of greater Scipio, Indiana will be missed on WFMS...

Re: Tandy out at WFMS

they need to get rid of the depression 'love 'em or leave 'em' crap they do on weekend nights. who told them they'd be successful airing depressing stories by losers who call in and say 'my husband slept with my cousin and had a baby, but i still love him and want to know how to get him back'

sounds like a springer episode. THAT'S the person who should be fired.

here's a thought - end of the week, people unwinding after a long hard week of work, pop a top, kick back and listen to 'he left me' stories with tear in my beer songs.

just another totally useless thought from the 'ho.

Re: Tandy out at WFMS

What a shame. I’ve known Darren since he first started on-air and appreciated his talent, his ability to work well with others, and his positive upbeat attitude. He will land on his feet again.

lets hear it for GUTS!!! something very RARE in radio these days. hats off then to Mr. Richards!

Also let go this week was Friends and Neighbors person, swing talent and promotion person Steve Stuart. Another that bled red, white and blue for that 'FMS. I am guessing they will not be nearly as involved in the community without him.

Dingy...thank you for mentioning Steve Stuart. Bob Richards convinced him to work radio full time as our "friends and neighbors" chief after our dear friend C.K. Webb (Kevin Tincher) died nearly eight years ago today. Saturday i got to fill in for what CK started( back in '94. it was Kevin Mason's idea)..for a dear friend of mine whom I love as a bro (Stu)...and we got to walk out the door together! He was packing his things and I was canned. We started at the same time in June '93. A firing is never fun...but this was the best case scenario if it HAD to happen! I wish Cody the best..I hear he's a nice guy!

Darren

Darren, Steve & Bob...I worked with you for a short time many years ago as Bill Elliot & I wish you all the best!

Who told them they'd be successful with that? WFMS listeners did for a long time...one reason why Darren was syndicated doing that very show a few years back.

"Love 'em or Leave 'em" - evidently, WFMS stopped lovin' ...

It's Cumulus doing what they do. Former Susquehanna/Cumulus guy Cody Allen is doing a syndicated night show through CMT/Westwood One. Cumulus is putting his show on their country stations (including here in Dallas...Cody was on the Wolf for years). Similarly, Entercom has been syndicating their 7-Mid. with one of their own.

Granted, I don't see breakouts on the Indianapolis numbers any longer, but I remember when Darren was first installed on the evening show, and how he completely turned the numbers around. The funny thing is, and Darren can correct me if I'm wrong...Darren only ended up on the night show because he had a tough time waking up and getting to the station on time for his 9 a.m. show!

Trapper you are correct about the "shift change."LOL. I actually heard the CMT/Cody Alan demo today and liked it! I hope he does well for them!

Just to clarify something: The only reason Bob is leaving is to start his own production company. He is a wonderful boss and friend.

Ho never listened to the show. This was the country version of Delilah. Not a cry in your beer hour. More uplifting than anything.

Cumulus and the one car funeral.

My prediction comes true. At every contract out they can anyone who might be making the product better. Hope Jim has his tapes out.

Friends and Neighbors was the coolest thing. A Sales and promotion dream come true. This made money, just not enough.

What is the plan, just make every Cumulus station generic enough to pipe an XM channel into it?

They seem to be canning anything local or different from their national feed. And they are doing this everywhere.

Does this allow Jeff to make Hank your country leader?

Sucks to hear that. Cumulus is really trying hard to destroy a country powerhouse.

It's Cumulus doing what they do! Small group owners who stay local will ALWAYS win if they do it the right way because these big companies apparently forgot how powerful a real live jock in the studio can be!

There was a time when WFMS was a station that would have been a dream job for me but not anymore. Cumulus is really screwing things up!

The only way Hank will be the country leader is if they make a few changes too and actually play songs that were hits. Not just anything and everything under the sun! Only play the best of the best of the older stuff. They are doing ok now but imagine what they could be if they shrunk the playlist a little bit.

Good luck to the real good guys...Darren, Bob & Steve!
