ANOTHER pirate in New Haven/Hamden on 104.5!

Like with the expanded A.M. band. There are lots of radios now that tune up to 1700 or a little higher. Nothing wrong with that nor the mandate to cover F.M. down to 76.

Right, and how did the expanded AM band work out? How many stations did what they were supposed to, and gave up their original frequency for their expanded band station?

If any actually did, it was a very small handful.

BTW, no need for a new AM window, there are dozens of 'em for sale in New England alone.

That ball was dropped by the F.C.C. who should've mandated that the stations HAVE to migrate to 1610-1700 that elected to do so, not this hair-brained "5-years, wink-wink" rule. Dozens for sale, but they're either A. too expensive for what you'd buy or B. waaaaaay far away.

I've mentioned this elsewhere as far as how long it could take for radios capable of tuning the Japanese FM band, and my answer is they are already here and not hard to obtain. Many of the MP3 players floating around out there (especially the ones meant to look similar to iPods) already have it in them. I have 4 different ones right here in my hands (no, I've never been to Japan, and I have all these as I like to have different programming on different units). Listed in the menu after the "Welcome" screen is "FM Radio" and it's switchable between the two standards.

Also, my brother purchased a multiband radio from EBAY for like $5 that has shortwave AM & FM and the radio is a Kaide KK-848, the radio is in Chinese and has FM spectrum listed as 70-108 on it, so availability isn't that hard if you think about it.

Here's the radio on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuouEW35ct8
and here's a clearer picture of it (just click enlarge) http://www.buyextraonline.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=570

(A Side Note: and not that this counts, but there was a vendor at a flea market recently I noticed had an FM receiver he was trying to get $35 for, it was Japanese and he didn't know it)

So, N1WVQ, why would you WANT an AM station as opposed to an FM? Just curious. :)
Sorry for the delay! I would want an A.M. station because I like the underdog. A.M. has been maligned for so long now that nobody it seems really knows what it's capable of. It sounds like a fun challenge, to make a nothing station into something. Instead of a station putting out 10 or 20% effort, to get as close to 100% as possible! Really redline that effort meter, you know? I think there are few truly helpless stations out there. Most dogs on the A.M. band have just been programmed poorly or operated by hucksters. People that don't believe in A.M. owning said stations is also hurting the band. I don't believe A.M. has been given a fair shot since the '70s & it's survived. I'd like to do what I can to help it along.

Also, I love rock and the 2 best rockers I'd ever heard were both on A.M. (76 KSJL, a ZRock affiliate & 54 Rock, CJSB).

Well, if you want an AM station as a hobby, and you can afford the royalty fees, power bills, TAXES, etc... I say "Knock yourself out". ;)

However, if you're actually expecting your station to make enough money to survive, it's going to be nearly impossible with rock & roll. Why? The audio quality. Young people simply WON'T listen to it.... especially when they have MULTIPLE stations on FM... or their own MP3's.

For an AM station to survive, nowadays, it has to fulfill a need in the area it covers: Specifically, a need that no other local station is meeting. One of those needs is broadcasting local high school sporting events. If your station is in a town where there's a lot of interest in the local HS team, then you would do well to secure rights to carry their games. Most likely, you will also be able to find talented and capable STUDENTS to help you with your station. :) Get enough students on board, and their parents will listen. Have a local presence and involvement... talk about the stuff in your station's area, local restaurants, events, etc... you'll do well.

Play head-banging music? You'll be mostly ignored. Now, like I said, if you have money to burn, and are just looking for a great hobby... go for it! :) Have fun! :)

PS: I'm not being sarcastic. :)

That was just what inspired me. I think A.M. Stereo can sound good on any station. That being said, I'd most likely do some sort of full service format: hyper local. High school & pro sports; local talk, info, swap shop, etc.. Some music perhaps. I LOVE the idea of bringing on students. I was a high school senior when I got my first job at WHIM Country. I loved it & am grateful for the opportunity!

I'll play rock on a Part 15!

The only number I can point to was an F.C.C. number 20 years ago when there were 24m receivers...but I know what you're saying. Still, I believe it's part of giving the listener the best experience possible.

Back to the original topic of this thread... the dead-air pirate on 104.5 is FINALLY OFF THE AIR! :)
