Another pirate on the air near Newark

nd2023

Banned
Elite Radio 97.5 has a huge signal, I could pick it up all the way in New Brunswick. It was strongest near Elizabeth/Newark. North of Newark, that station was interfering with another pirate station on 97.5. It had a hip hop mixshow when I tuned in.

There's now a new 96.7 pirate in downtown Newark. It completely wipes out another pirate station, Streetz 96.5. 96.7 had a Carribean format.

Jamz 100 (100.1) is also new, which was playing a reggaeton show. Why they chose 100.1, I have no idea, since it's got Z100 and another 99.9 pirate. Its signal only went a few miles till 99.9 splattered onto it.

As of now, the frequencies with pirate stations in north NJ: 87.7, 87.9, 90.1, 90.3, 91.9, 92.7, 93.5, 94.3, 95.1 (2 pirates), 95.9, 96.1, 96.5, 96.7 (2), 97.5 (2), 99.9, 100.1, 102.3, 102.5, 103.1, 103.9 (2), 104.7 (2), 106.3, 107.9
It would be hard to hear good old fashioned static with all those pirate stations

I have my XM on 107.9, I used to get the signal through the house now i get interference from that pirate in the same room that my XM is in. I dont even get WEBE 108 anymore when my XM is off. They have a number that you can call the station, but I never did that. I guess the FCC is too worried about the XM/Sirius merger instead of cracking down on pirates. It is happening all around the country, unless these are authorized low power stations.

95.9 (im guessing this interferes wiuth The Rat :( )
96.5 wired 96 probably has some very pissed off listeners.
99.9 the hawk maybe affected, they dont have a good signal to begin with
106.3 g rock is probably losing some miles as well

note to pirates: LEAVE THE ROCK STATIONS ALONE, GO INTERFERE WITH ANOTHER RAP STATION! (even though wired 96 aint rock, but their actually listenable)

speaking of which, why are there no rock pirates? if i were to pirate a station, it would be active rock

With all the pirates, there's no frequency you can keep your XM on. 102.3 might be your best bet since that pirate is weak and WBAB only comes in during tropo.

There's a term for rock "pirate" stations: college radio

WTSR!!

but i would have SOAD, Tool, Godsmack, Zeppelin, Disturbed, Korn, Pantera... like 107.1 the bone

Paterson had a pirate station at 90.5 that completely bled through everything around that frequency, completely prohibiting me listening to WFUV at 90.7. Constant complaints to the FCC resulted in no action, so I contacted WFUV and informed them that since I'm a generous contributor to their public radio station (which I am) and cannot tune it in I have no choice and discontinue my donations. That caused some action and the frequency has been clear for the last few weeks (for now).

I did the same thing when a pirate station popped up at 95.3, interfering with WPLJ 95.5. Wrote them, said I'm a patron of their advertising but can't patronize then if I can't hear the ads, then the station went away almost immediately. The FCC is a joke when it comes to this matter. It seems when it comes to pirate stations, money talks, or the lack thereof that licensed stations finally get of their butts and prod the local authorities to act.

Let's think about how the FCC, or anyone else, can find a pirate.
You listen on a frequency, and hear music that, in your opinion,
doesn't belong there. You listen for awhile, and your suspicions
are confirmed. Now let's come up with a plan to look for
pirates on or near the station I am on now, New Jersey 101.5.
The station goes about 50 miles in all directions ... so we need
to listen on frequency, above and below 2 channels about every mile
in about every direction out to about 50 miles.
I figure that would take about 3 weeks and use $ 5000 worth of gas.
Now multiply that by 100's of stations in New Jersey.

OK ... unworkable right !

The ONLY WAY the FCC can act on a pirate is from a complaint
from a reliable source, the broadcaster ! The FCC is only going
to roll when a station is being interfered with in its primary
area, they can't waste their time worrying about DXers.

So you did the right thing contacting the station.
Granted, piracy seems to be out of control -- but I challenge
anyone to come up with a workable plan to find that the
pirates even exist, let alone their location and get access
and then find the perp ... most of the time the transmitter
is remoted on top of a building someplace with some
untraceable studio - transmitter link. You can't just go
knocking on doors and asking people to turn off their
pirate transmitters. Federal Marshals have to be called in,
and I'm sure kids playing music aren't a high priority.

Broadcasters are 99% self policing ... they play by the rules
and the FCC only jumps in on complaints.

Uh.... A slight correction

They get a complaint from ANY LICENSED OPERATOR they usually act on them. 97% of the time.

Actually it takes less than 2 days to locate an unlicensed station.

3 were reciently fined and shutdown and all it took was 16 hours to find all 3. (Smyrna, TN)

So the best way to alert the FCC is to have the licensed station being interfered by the pirate complain about the pirate. What about Elite Radio 97.5, which is located far away from WJJZ and WALK that those stations don't care about that area?

it dont matter if its in the stations local range or not. if the station comes in in a certain area, and a pirate interferes, the station can and will complain if it is losing them listeners, weather its in their target area or not. if oit comes in clear 24/7 people listen weather its 1 mile 20 miles or 60 miles.

for instance, i live in levittown. 9 out of 10 times you look at my radio, its tuned to 105.7 or 106.5, if there was a pirate in my area causing interference with any of those two stations, hell yea i'll call in and make them awarfe of the situation, and i gaurentee they will file the complaint and see to it that the pirate is shut down, that way myself as well as all the others in my area (which believe me there are, these stations come in clear 24/7 unless theres really strong tropo), can continue to listen to the station and enjoy it without some spanish or uncut rap pirate (or anything else) interfering with it.

A funny story
Yesterday I was scanning the dial and found the Blaze 99.9 pirate. They gave out a phone number, and soon after that, a caller was on the air. I decided to call the pirate station and they put me live on the air. I said the f-word, the s-word, as many curse words as I could say before they cut me off. All those curse words went on the air. I wish I recorded it so I could use that in a complaint to the FCC. Maybe they'll get an even bigger fine.
