Another Pirate radio station!

Yes thats right another pirate radio just went on air last week covering us up on 96.7 fm. House is located on Druid rd and Keene rd in Clearwater transmitting about a 6 + mile radius on Sundays and about 4 miles during some week nights. Music consists of oldies, lite easy listening great sleeping music stuff. We live about 2 miles from him and with our transmitter on, the pirate station covers us up within 50ft of our location. Gonna have to stop by and say hello with a friendly smile, maybe he will change his freq for us. Or maybe he won't....

Good luck WKID; hopefully they will change freqencies, if they don't get an FCC visit first!

96.7 frequency seems to be a popular frequency for pirates in Pinellas county.

Several years ago, there were two pirate stations that broadcast only on the weekend, one was at 96.3 and the other was at 96.7; they were both broadcasting from the Lake Maggoire (sp?) Area and both had a radius of about 4 or 5 miles.

There was previosly a more blanant pirate station with it's antenna directly across from the main Post Office at 1st Ave N and 31st St N; that station IIRC was at 102.1 and broadcast 24/7, gave out a phone number for request and even advertised for a nearby restaurant! They were on the air at least several months before the FCC shut them down. (I'm thinking there were on the air at least 6 months).

Yes, all of these were active for quite awhile before (at least in the case of 102.1) being visited by Ralph Tiberius Barlow's minions. I DFed all three.

96.3 and 96.7 were from houses in the area you state; 102.1 from a 2-story brick building on 9th St S at Central, nice stick on the roof (since removed). I believe all remain archived on my pirate page:

87.9, 99.9, 102.1, 102.9 are the best channels to check in Pinellas for suspicious activity, bad frequency choices like 88.3 notwithstanding.

Thanks for the link, Terry Kay............
and....... I spoke too soon (don't we all from time to time!); 88.3 is back!, now whether they were shut down by the FCC and just being defiant or just weren't on the air yesterday afternoon, I don't know.

Since I had about an hour block of free time I drove to the area and from as near as I can determine, the transmitter (at least today) is somewhere between 5th Ave N and 8th Ave N between 23rd St N and 27th St N; that's the area where I had experienced interference to WMNF on my car radio. and also when I turned the sensitivity down on my Grundig to the lowest of three levels; I was still getting s strong signal in that area.

I still can't believe the pirate is on that frequency.

Interestingly enough on the way back from there I stopped at the downtown Publix (3rd Ave S, between 2nd and 3rd St S and still had 88.3 on and I thought they had been an abrupt program change as it went from disco to Sam the Sham and the Pharoes...."Wooly Bully", but driving in circles around the parking lot I figured that was someone's XM/Sirius radio's broadcasting on that frequency.
