Another Power 96 question

Just a quick question, but back in the Dance friendly days it seemed like between 6 and 10 at night they leaned more Hip Hop. This is what I can remember from 1996 at least. Were they always like that, or was that just for a short time. I never noticed any heavy dayparting on previous trips to Miami but maybe I just didnt pay attention. But in 1996 Dance was more Euro Dance sounding, and less House and Freestyle than earlier years, so it would make sense that Power would shy away from this during there most Youth Friendly hours.

Actually, Power 96 played just as much Dance after 6 PM. If I recall correctly, it also didnt daypart any of the Hip Hop records in rotation, even though some Rhythmics did (and most CHR/Pop stations did). A good example of a Rhythmic in the 90s that played plenty of Dance in the daytime but little at night would be Jammin Z-90 in San Diego.

They defenitly were day parting around 00-01.. I would hear songs like Depeche Mode - I Promise U, Strafes Set It Off, baby Ds let me be your fantasy, and Azido da Bass - dooms Night during the day but at night it would be alot of hip hop in regular rotation, juveniles back that azz up, country grammer by nelly... but then for the 10 oclock club broadcast theyd usually start off with like 10minutes of retro 80s dance and then go to 15-20 mins of trance, and then hip hop, then dancehall reagge... power was really broad back in the day before party 931 debued.. i think party 931 really hurt miami radio because it ruined power 96 which was a major influence across the us... it seems to me like once power bailed out of dance, the rest of the chr/rhys followed suit

Party 93.1's debut didnt really hurt Dance as Power 96, in the months prior to Party, was starting to phase off the Dance titles. You're right that in 2000 it was common to still hear titles like Baby D or even Crystal Method, but by 2001 it was mainly Modjo's "Lady" and Gigi Dagostino. Power started playing more Hurban/Reggaton, and found success with it for a couple of years while Party 93.1 gave South FL a real Dance station. The problem with WPYM was that Cox didnt want to give it any on air DJs, and towards the end the playlist didnt seem to get updated much (aside from adding one too many remixes of Pop songs).

It seems that Power 96 Miami and also B-96 in Chicago both seemed to bail on dance at the same time. I definately think this affected other rhythmic's to follow suit because WPOW and WBBM are two of the most influential rhythmics in the country. I dont really count Hot 97 and Power 106 during that era, as they were both Urban hip hop by then.

But anyway, Chrles is right, Power 96 slowly started to phase out the Dance starting in about 99, but remained dance friendly till about 2000-2001, even shortly after Party started you could still hear a couple two or three dance songs in rotation. I still remember that ATC-Around the world was I believe the last Dance record in rotation on Power before they went straight hip hop-reggea....

I remember they where big on the stanton warriors remix of dooms night by azzido da bass, (which btw would still sound good on the station being its got that reggae flave for the vocals and a killer beat) even in the late part of 01 / 02... this was the same time they had Girls by Jay Z in heavy rotation, (i remember my gf comenting they must play the song twice an hour) they also had a drum and bass track by Kosheen in rotation, but i cant remember the name for the life of me.. I even heard Take Me Where You Are by Fiori which was a drum and bass type track, soemtime around november before Party debued...

Power was also big on Ian Van Dahls Will I, and madonnas what it feels like for a girl trance remix was all over there mixshows..

I miss the variety of music heard on the station.. they had everything, the hip hop, dance, old school... good memories

The Kosheen track your talking about was called HIDE YOU..... Believe it or not WSNX in Grand Rapids was also playing the Kosheen track. Alot of people dont believe me or remember, but WSNX used to be pretty Dance friendly.

Tru. SNX used to play songs like "Fatboy" by Max-A-Million in the 90s 8)
Dalimah, are you sure you're not confusing Power 96 with 95.3 Party Orlando? Cuz I rmemeber Party playing all the songs you mentioned (Kosheen, Fiori, Ian Van Dahl, the Above & Beyond remix to Madonna) but for some reason cant remember it on Power 96 :-\

I remember Power 96 playing Kosheen hide U,,,, But I dont think Power ever played Fiora-take me where you are, or the other songs. They had dumped dance by that time. I think he may be thinking of either Orlando's party like Chrles said, or he could also be thinking of Miami's Party 93.1, they played all those songs too. In fact WPYM played them to death.

If the Madonna song your talking about is What it feels like for a girl.... I dont think Power ever played the dance version, though they may have played the original in light rotation.

no im not confusing it, but the madonna was in mixshow play from clubs.. i never new it was madonna either (not a big madonna fan) but that remix, was amazing... i think it was the airscape remix? same version 931 had in regular rotation for years, but power was on it atleast in mixshows before party was in existance..

Mixshows, yeah okay. ;) Thats probably where you heard most those songs, cause Power continued to play Dance in Mixshows a year or two after they dropped dance from the normal playlist.
