Another Radio Gaff

When listening to American Top 40 this morning, they played "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing"-New Seekers, which was in the Top 20 I think. An hour later they played the very same song again in the Top 10. Now how did they mess that one up? ???

They didn't mess up. You weren't listening very closely. It wasn't the "very" same song. It was the same song, but two different versions performed by two different artists.

First, he played the version by the Hillside Singers, the studio group that sang the original commercial track that the song was based on, which was (unofficially) called "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke", used for a Coca-Cola commercial. When the commercial became popular, they rewrote the track as "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing", and released it as a pop single.

Then in the next hour, he played the cover version by the New Seekers, which turned out to be a much bigger hit. The Hillside Singers version made #13, the New Seekers version made #7. They both sound very similar, and they were both on the charts at the same time, on this week in 1972.

Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars! ;D

Ooooooooooohhhhh, ok! Thanks for the clarification! I didn't realize that there was 2 different versions of the song, all on the chart at the same time! When is the last time that has happened?

When is the last time that has happened? You mean when is the last time that you weren't listening very closely?

That would be a few weeks ago, when you were having an issue with Ryan Seacrest and Sara Bareilles "Love Song".

The number of irrelevant posts on this board is staggering.

Oh very funny, you know what I meant, and I still stand by that there was a mistake there too. ::)

You listen more closely than the average listener, that's for sure!

Casey makes quite a few mistakes...most of them just because the information wasn't correct at the time. This week he called Beverly Bremers (who had 2 Top hits, the biggest of which was "Don't Say You Don't Remember") 'Bremers' and it's pronounced "Breemers"...I am sure no one knew at the time it she was on the charts.

As for the two hits at one time in the Top 40, it used to happen a lot...like the Themes from Rocky, Star Wars & Close Encounters. More recently "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock and The Hit Masters.

I was almost going to say the 2 versions of One Tin Soldier (Original Caste and Coven) hit the charts
at the same time, but Wikipedia says they were in 1970 and 71 respectively though it's possible both
were on the charts in '73 under a re-issue...?

I was listening to AT40 from 1/13/71 on my "magic radio" (XM 70s on 7) yesterday and he played
an older Bert Kaempfert song (Wonderland by Night; that's right, don't get mugged when you take
the Blue Line to Revere! :) ), and said it was the only German artist to top the charts in the rock era. I was almost going to say, yes, at the _time_, but Nena's 99 Red Balloons did it later--but acc to Wikipedia that
was only #2 in the US (BUT #1 in Canada, UK, etc.)

Coven was a remake of the Original Caste version, recorded for the first Billy Jack movie...

Falco would almost qualify, but I think he was Austrian!
