My magnet is on the side of a metal file cabinet and I do not let any tapes touch the metal cabinet. I also never remove the magnet, but just run the tapes up against it.

I have some tapes that I have used over three hundred times, and they sound fine. I have never had the problem of the oxide wearing off. Don't most manufacturers of cassette give you a lifetime guarantee?
