Another Round Of Layoffs At iHeartMedia

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/200744/another-round-of-layoffs-at-iheartmedia/

A new list of Layoffs by Iheart inc has been released. Here are some of the people whose named have been released so far in the Iheart cuts.

Albuquerque

Baltimore
CHR “Z104.3” WZFT Program Director/afternoon host Mike ‘McCabe’ Kerr. Kerr joined WZFT in January from the same role at iHeart’s 107.1 WERZ Portsmouth NH.

Boston
KJ Carson departs as morning host on Rhythmic AC “97.7 The Beat” WKAF after three and a half years at the station.

Because Iheart needs more voice-tracked programming. They are running their stations into the ground.

Yeah, voice-tracked Seacrest and Bobby Bones and Elvis Duran are running stations into the ground.

Does the average radio listener really care if the DJ banter between songs is “live & local”? If this means more music and fewer commercials due to the lower operating overhead, I doubt many listeners would complain.

Is it just me or is there way way less local station contests these days. Its mostly national text in contests.

Overall, they really don’t. My station’s PD and our consultant have already found this out through countless studies. Hence why we’ve aired a syndicated morning show since signing on 20 years ago.

In a word, no.

I'm not sure why this surprises people. Look at TV--the number of those local "AM....Wherever" type shows have dwindled. People would rather watch national shows. Higher quality content, bigger name guests, etc.

Tis the season, plus throw-in a bad economy because of the pandemic.

One of the things that always gets me about reaction to November layoffs is the mention of the holiday season. November is the month in which most businesses, especially large corporations, firm up their financial outlooks for the coming year. It's unfortunate, but purely coincidental, that the layoff announcements always come at a time of year when many people are starting to think about, and plan for, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm sure the people making those decisions don't get any sadistic pleasure out of ruining dozens of Christmases; if the calendar ended in March, they could do the dirty job then, with less impact on important family traditions, but it doesn't.

Anyone who's been in this business for a number of years should know by now, that cuts start at the beginning of Q4. Who or how many are affected depends whether the stations or group have managed to hit their revenue projections to finish the calendar year. If for whatever reason they can't hit revenue numbers, expenses are next. The most expensive-expense? FTE's. That, and if the company is publicly-traded, Wall Street analysts are usually willing to forgive those companies who are actively looking to cut costs before the upcoming new calendar year.

Probably not I don't think people care about “live & local” slogans on music radio that much at this point. But if its sports/talk or news/talk probably the "live and local" could be up for consideration.

Barely even news/talk. Much of that is syndicated. Exceptions here and there, but you're talking one or two local slots at some stations, and then on to the national programs.

Country Aircheck reports that longtime WMIL Milwaukee PD Kerry Wolfe is gone:

WMIL's Wolfe Departs: iHeartMedia/Milwaukee SVPP & WMIL PD Kerry Wolfe has exited after 31 years. He joined as APD/MD/middays in August 1989 and was elevated to PD the following November. His departure is part of ongoing cutbacks at iHeartMedia that began Monday. Wolfe’s prior career stops include KKCS/Colorado Springs and WBIG/Greensboro, NC.

There is no "good" time. None. If you've been on the receiving end of that message, yes, the holidays may be an especially lousy time. But it is business. It's how some financial calendars work.

Not to mention in the middle of a pandemic that seems to be getting worse.
