Another Sad Day In Philly Radio

Yes folks if you haven't heard or read earlier...Legendary brokered broadcaster Mike Phillips announced his retirement from Philly radio this morning. Mike has had self -legendary success in brokered broadcasting stations like WNJC in Vineland, NJ. (Wherever that it is). Prior to his comeback this past year...he also had isolated success at low powered Channel 7. (Does anyone remember the call letters?)
During his tenure at 'NJC...he's received better rate offers at radio station WNWR....but declined their discounts due to avoid any competitive friction with his mentor RJ.
Mike recently found himself back on the tube (or I should say people's computer monitors) announcing and relaying play by play Flyer's hockey action while people can watch the game themselves and see the action by the time he announces it. Known for his black trademark sunglasses and matching Car, Mike can be seen driving around the streets of Philly, were the movie Rocky was filmed. (because that's where he lives) and also has had celebrities like the Phillie's ball girls, Flyer's parking attendants, PennDott street sweeping crew, as well as extras from the Fox hit TV show "Til Death" on his show. He's had other radio personalities from WBCB, WSNJ, and WAMS announced and invited...but never show up.
City mayor Michael Nutre made a statement at City Hall today.....that he plans to place an honor for Mike at Penn's Landing next friday in honor of his retirement. The reception I understand will be free attendance , plus cake and ice cream for everybody that attends. (Oh by the way , I forgot to mention that's on the Camden side)
Mike good luck wherever it may lead you, the Philly airwaves lost yet another great broadcaster. (Alright, fill in the blanks) :'(

so dont say its a sad day because your not broadcasting anymore give me a break

don't forget "jim o'brien" on WFIL in the 70's! i never heard of this broked broadcaster mike phillips.who he? i'm sad to hear of big ron's passing.is the elvis show on sunday mornings gonna stay on???

And just as sadly ... Mike Phillips "retired" from "brokerism radio" without even getting a gold watch.

Nobody would "trade" I'm hearing....

Starbucks and Carny Feet ... your posts are "Comedy Gold."

And as for relaying Flyers play by play AFTER people have already seen it on television, that was a Phillips invention...called "HD Delay Delay" for people who may have missed the play in analogue, then in HD conversion, then in another level of HD delay for people who are terribly, terribly slow.

That way, it was assured that no one missed the replay, at least in audio.

No wonder he "retired."

PS - Mike a household name:

You Oak!

You're missing the point to it all. Think of ingenuity of it. It’s like Disneyland. After you se it on TV, and hear a delayed replay in HD, then tune to 1360 and if you listen really really carefully you can hear an electrostatic filled instant replay. Of course, hopefully you already have heard it so the parts you miss through the static, your can just fill it in, in your mind. It’s the ultimate fill in the blank instant replay, without the hallucinogen. Then you can tune to 640, and continue the Disneyland experience, with genuine analog 5k dynamic range pop tart music.

My response was in dire hope that you would comment and set me straight, Sam, and as always ... you have, quite eloquently.

And the only thing I might add is that all this was done with no copper, no ground, no groundplane, no tower, no, well ... nothing.

Indicentally, I heard a scoop today that that 3-meter tall Part 15 AM is, in fact, on its way to a cluttered block of concrete and steel near you in center-city Philadelphia! Listen for it.

I understand that a crane has been hired to lift the flamethrower transmitter up to the 3rd floor.

Quick! Notify all small aircraft to avoid the area. Hide the children. Cover the windows. Post RF warnings. Unplug the appliances. Run for your lives.

Thank you for your description of the town of Vineland, NJ. I don't plan to visit. But as far as the post from Mr. Manors trying to sell me maps......or maybe he got lost reading the post. There was no intention for me visiting Vineland. Thank you. Mr . Manors I suggest you not be a travel agent...
My post above is to continually honor a Philly broadcaster that never was. My salute to Mike Phillip's 2 hour retirement stands forth with dignity. In all my years in radio...there is never gonna be a brokered broadcaster that doesn't have a clue how big (a fool) he is. Forget all this crap about 'FIL' CAU, Joe Niagra, Jim Nettleton, The Great Gene Hart, Terry Young etc..... Let alone a cell phone, they can't hold a butterfly net to him. None of those guys never worked in a padded studio....He did! They also never had to pay an unemployment check to be on the air for their time like he did. They never had to call the Flyers play by play on a analog television set....they got free front row tickets. Did you ever think they way he acts like he does on the internet could possibly lead to a after school children's television show? Think about it!
What I'm asking from everyone is.....PLEASE LEAVE MIKE PHILLIPS ALONE. Ok...he 's not Britney Spears with a sex change.....but with the high price of high gas ....let's go down to Camden this Friday to honor this legendary brokered broadcaster's 2 hour retirement. Oh, please bring your sunglasses.

...and a camera!
