ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT IN MAJOR MARKET ATLANTA.....

....And it's SAD that I am now linking up to a random, tiny, small-market radio station online so that I can hear the latest pop-club mixes on OPEN HOUSE PARTY. Nearly 25 years on the air and it STILL has that fresh, LIVE, coast-to-coast, PARTY sound! Only it's found in cities like Mountain Top, PA and Selma, AL.....but not in ATLANTA! ???

We have it in San Antonio lol :p
I don't really like the Top40 stations in Atlanta to much? Star941's website is real nice though

Why exactly does that surprise you? You make it sound like every major market carries OHP. Of the top 25 radio markets, 2 of them carry it, D.C. and Pittsburgh. OHP is mainly a small market show, major markets just don't play it, probably because they think they can use their own programming and be better off.

In ATL, Star would never play it as they shift to Hot A/C, and Q does great with Saturday Night Q, it'd make no sense for either of them to pick it up.

He's 70. And age is hardly a reason to dismiss a RADIO personality. You don't have to look at him, you just have to hear him talk to callers and interview artists, both of which he does well.

The guy is definitely a pro and I enjoy his on-air delivery. He never sounds fake or like he's trying too hard. Rather, it sounds like he's genuinely enjoying himself, his show, his audience, and the music, everytime I hear OHP. John started the concept of Open House Party back in the 1960s, and it's great that he's still got the energy, and the ability to relate to the CHR audience.

I love OHP, and I really hope John keeps doing it,, it just isnt the same without John.. I first heard OHP back in 1988 I think it was on I-100 WOKI in Knoxville, and also he was at WDJX Louisville, and WZPL and later WHHH in Indianapolis,, None of which are major markets, but they are big cities none the less. I dont recall ever hearing JOHN in Chicago. I dont like the sunday night show as well,,, its just not the same with John,, but I hope when he retires that they get someone like Jackson Blue to do it,, he is great on his syndicated Party Playhouse show.... And they are both Superadio programs.... My only beef with Party Playhouse is the show should be live at overnights, and stations should have a local evening show.

I'm sorry, but at 70 you shouldn't be on a top 40 station on a Saturday night. And he's not that good. Never was. I heard 2 breaks last weekend and he asked lame questions and had bad energy.

Kane was great when he did Sunday nights. That Kannon guy sucks and all the affiliates OHP gained from Kane have since left.

Guess this shows how different our opinions can be. John has a warm, friendly, genuine personality. He has a big voice absolutely perfect for Saturday night ... nobody but people on here care that he's old. And I'm sorry, but I hated Kane .... his voice was loud and obnoxious on the ears, I can't imagine waking up to that in the mornings and I heard he was doing mornings in DC? At the risk of totally alienating myself, Kane (and some other CHR jocks around the country) come off as the kind of twenty and thirty-something men on the radio who were nerdy in high school and try and make jokes with women on the radio to make up for it. I'm in my early twenties ... and it's kind of repulsive listening to fake CHR jocks interacting with some of their listeners, especially female callers. John never really flirts or acts stupid on air, and I'll take old and genuine over young, loud, and obnoxious anyday.

Not attacking you, but welcome to not being in the demo. ;D The reality is, his show, nor any other in CHR, should care what a bunch of radio guys (emphasis on the "male" part) think. That said, your listeners don't care about big voices, and they DO care that he's old if he sounds that way (and IMO, he does). Personality in radio is about relatability, and John has very little. Not to mention his act hasn't changed in 30 years. Guess what...his audience has evolved...he'd be wise to do the same.

I agree that "listening to fake CHR jocks interacting with some of their listeners" can be awful, but Kane is hardly an example of that. Just because YOU can't relate to him, doesn't mean the rest of his audience can't. Check his ratings, both in DC and in Tampa. He wins. Admittedly, I'm biased. I've known Kane for years, and aside from winning all over the place, he is one of the hardest working guys in the business. For everything that's wrong with "personalities" in radio...with most people sucking, and the ones that are good having egos bigger than their paychecks...he's a shining example of what's right.

Final note: Johnny G doesn't flirt with his female callers because A) they're mostly 12 year olds, and B) he's WAY more interested in the shirtless boy toys, errrrr, "interns" he has running around the studio. ;)

He's got two kids and does a live afternoon show in Dallas. Do you really think he's going to be up until 6 in the morning?

LOL good point,,,, I like jackson,s show,, but didnt care for Romeo too much, he was OK... but he is better as a local Boston Jock.. Ive chatted with jackson before and I knew about his two kids and morning show,, so its not beef with him per say.. I like the guy... I Always liked the Playhouse when it used to be called the All Night Cafe,, and had a jock from Dallas and the former Z-104 in Washington, I forgot his name, but I wonder where he is now. Matt something I think was his first name. He was older than Jackson and Romeo,, his kids where probably grown if he had any. The All Night Cafe had a female jock on weekends, usually after OHP...

If I was in Atlanta, I would be counting by blessings BIG time right now, because what they have on Saturday nights is a lot more than what i could only wish for all the years I had to live there from 1989-1997! I was actually pissed when I moved back to Az AND THEN they got 95.5 AND Q100 sounding a certain way Fri & Sat nights from around 2002-2005 or so!!! Then I was here in Az with everyone who decided to go as urban as they could and get rid of any shows that consisted of anything over about 115bpm. I mean, we're fine now, and Atlanta radio has declined a bit when it comes to music and fun since early to mid 00's, but what they have on Saturday nights on Q alone still beats ALL of the 90's (unless of course you were fine with booty bass). Even Star*94 got a little active on Sat. nights for a while in the early to mid 00's. I couldn't believe that STAR was doing that - but it quickly came to an end. If only WPOW were in Atl. instead of Miami..... Things probably would've been a bit different!

Anyway, who am I to complain? After all, we had Energy 92.7/101.1 in Arizona 2003-2008 - when it was needed most, while everyone else was "pretending" alternative, pop, and hip hop were the only sounds of rhythmic / top 40.

By the way, what do they play on Open House Party? That name ("open house party") for a show or specialty program sounds so old school to me..
