Another Sesame Street Scandal

I preferred Garrett Saunders' portrayal of Gordon.

Interesting question: since Gordon is the only character to be recast (four different actors have played him) would they be able to recast him again if Roscoe Orman quit or died? Or would they write him out like Mr. Hooper?

Too bad that Elmo the character didn't follow his voice out the door.

Since the 'human' supporting cast had their airtime reduced years ago, my guess is they could just phase Gordon out, and then just not mention him. When Northern Calloway died under rather bizarre and tragic circumstances in the late '80s, the wrote out 'David' by saying he'd moved to his grandmother's farm. I don't know how they handled the departure of Linda Bove when she decided to leave the show.

In the book "Street Gang", it was mentioned that Calloway was fired from the show due to his continual bizarre behavior, which included sexual harassment of another female cast member, later to die in a mental hospital of a heart condition brought on by his mental illness. However, in the "Sesame Street Unpaved" (1999) and 40th anniversary (2009) books, it was said that Calloway died of stomach cancer, if as if Sesame Workshop was embarrassed of how Calloway actually left the show and died.

I thought the 'David moved away' episode aired after Calloway's death in 1990, but it was actually 1989. According to Wiki, he had a very violent psychotic break back in 1980, but went on lithium for several years; the behavior that eventually got him fired, including the sexual harrassment episodes, apparently started in 1987, and he spiraled down from there; on-screen, Maria and David 'broke up' in a storyline where she fell in love with Luis, and some episodes actually depicted David feeling sad, but supportive of Maria. (I hadn't watched the show in years by that point, but remember some TV GUIDE stories about it, and thinking that it didn't seem like the 'Sesame Street' I knew.) I hope that Calloway's threatening/stalking behavior wasn't directed at Sonia Manzano, who plays Maria.

I would not be surprised if they just phased Gordon out. It actually seems like most of the older humans have been phased out over the years. Susan (Loretta Long) and Luis (Emilio Delgado) were not shown in ANY new material this past season. Gordon was in a few episodes, but not many, as was Bob. Both Loretta Long and Emilio Delgado are in their 70s, so they're pretty old. The only humans they really use now are Leela and Chris, both on the younger side. I heard there's going to be a new cast member next year, so that will probably phase out the older humans even more.

Who actually owns Hooper's Store now?
A character known only as 'Alan', played by an Asian-American named Alan Muraoka. The previous owner was Mr. Handford, and before him, David. But, just like with Arnold's on 'Happy Days' the name of the business never changed.
