Vern Baldwin gets a cool $1.6 mil in the settlement agreement in exchange for giving up trying to move 102.3 from Wilmington to Mount Sterling.

If WHIZ ownership is offering that much $$, I assume they are betting on making a lot more by selling once the move goes through and they get coverage into the metro.

Translator goes away. Also there are several LPFm apps for Columbus area (believe one or two granted) that will probably not be built.

WHIZ-FM will probably be sold as soon as this Baltimore station is built, the shareholders will be happy, but I don't know if the station will really make much more money than it could in Zanesville.

Will WHIZ studios move to Baltimore?

For those of us who are confused after reading the FCC documentation, does this mean that WHIZ's FM studios in Zanesville will cease to exist? What does all of this mean? Someone please explain in laymans terms.

for all practical purposes, they could move the studios just about anywhere in columbus... the station just became a big ticket columbus signal for someone.

wonder who??

WHIZ-AM will remain in Zanesville, and WHIZ-FM will be in Baltimore, or more likely somewhere here in Columbus. WHIZ-FM will become a Columbus station with their legal being "WHIZ-FM, Baltimore-Columbus" unless they change the calls when they move.

Re: Will WHIZ studios move to Baltimore?

I've heard that WHIZ has been doing a lot of remodeling of their building and studios in Zanesville including equipment upgrades. Why would they do so much work if they're going to be moving? Are they selling the Zanesville property?

Assuming they're actually going to sell, my bets are on Saga. Saga's been unable to score a second good signal, pretty desperate. And a few months ago they hired a heavy-hitter engineer (from Cox in Dayton, I recall).

Second guess, but way down on the list: Nabco for Ted.

Third guess: Roger Vaughan, desperate for years for a better signal for CD101.

As for Infinity, I know they've backed off the "get out of markets below #25" edict, but I don't think they're looking to actually *expand* in the below-25 markets.

BNS/Dispatch is out because of cross-ownership law uncertainty.

I suppose Radio One could be a possibility, but what's left for them to do if they want to stick with African-American oriented formats?

Wait a minute...can CC take control of the signal by dumping the Brew?

Does anyone know if this signal will be as good as wasted-to-date 93.3?
______________

You forgot the most obvious owner for the station...SALEM! They would LOVE to have a FM station here in Columbus, and have been looking for one for years. That would be a great stick for them to have.

Excellent point. I'd still put my money on Saga, but Salem would be a pretty strong #2 bet.

Also, given how much further from downtown the stick would be vs 93.3 (south of Baltimore, vs. directly south of downtown along 270), this would not be a killer signal would it? Maybe about the same as K95.5, or even a little worse? Better than the outlying class A's maybe, but not on a par with the big guys? tpt or any other technical folks, am I right?
______________

They will still have an AM station in Zansville and the TV station...

The only thing moving at this point is the FM transmitter once it goes thru... which means they will move the FM studios and more then likely the studios will be in Columbus or somewhere close (suburb) if they keep it. If a big wig gets it like Salem, Radio One, Infinity, Saga... we know where the studios will be.

Just was thinking, is it possible that CVCO Inc could go after it? They own 104.9 Gahanna/Columbus, 92.7 Zansville, and 95.1 Mt Gilliad...

I concur. As I remember, the coordinates used for Baltimore are not far from the 103.5 site.

BNS can't buy

CC probably has enough on its plate to try anything else.

Good point!

Re: Will WHIZ studios move to Baltimore?

Interesting. I remember see a proposal that put the allocation coordinates just north of Baltimore...the current coordinates paint a different picture.

See map (if this works--watch wrap)

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/plotit?f...c6=0&hi=1&h2o=1&misc=1&str=0&filein=0&mode=01

Or, to do it the easy way, go to FM query, then to "circle plots" put in coordinates 39-47-51/ 82-30-07 and enter two circles of 28 km (city grade) and 39 km (protected 57 dbu contour).

Not a great Columbus signal.

But I bet there will be more to this story... e.g., a site much closer to downtown. Still, it will likely be a DA away from the west when finally built.

the $$$ wanted will be too much for them to swallow.

I know a year or so ago WHIZ tried to buy 92.7 from CVCO Inc... that obviously didnt happen.

Why would it direct signal AWAY from town? I can't see who the station would protect.

Re: Will WHIZ studios move to Baltimore?

The problem is that they need to move close to 15~20 miles towards the west to be able to put a decent signal over Columbus.

From the allocation site (which does not provide very much coverage of Columbus) they have an 8 mile margin towards Galion/102.3 towards the NW and 13 miles toward Wilington/102.3 which is WSW.

These two stations appear to be the biggest problem. However, they also have to protect EBN Cincy (24 mile margin to them) and CPZ Sandusky (same) and they are close to 102.9 Springfield but have a fair amount of margin that way.

Hence a DA towards the West & NW is needed as they get closer to Cols. in order to protect some of these stations.
