Another station on 1060

Living in Newark, Delaware, listening to KYW at 4:15 in the morning, the signal obviously is not the best. But one thing I find odd is that frequently a station playing music challenges KYW,

The station is apparently playing classical music as I will hear classical-like vocals and instrumental music in a similar vein. I figure this must be a Canadian station, but really have no idea. Any clues?

Jim,
The station you hear playing music under KYW is most likely XEEP-1060 in Mexico City, which KYW protects with a deep null to the southwest. XEEP images itself as Radio Educacion. Among its music is jazz and classical.

Thanks Dave.

After 40 years of AM DXing, that would be the first Mexican station I have ever heard. It never really comes in louder than KYW, but it is strong enough to make the sports at 4:15 and the business report at 4:25 difficult to pick out. That Grundig radio of mine is apparently doing a good job.

Interesting. I thought I heard somewhere that there was a time that a Cuban station was operating on the frequency. Was that ever the case, or was that story unfounded? When I lived in Bear, Delaware, in the early 90s, I sometimes heard Latin beat music, not classical, interfering with KYW in the predawn hours. Was that the Mexican station?

Dave,

It may also be WLNO in New Orleans. There have been a few posts on the DX groups the past couple of days saying that it appears they are running their day power/pattern at night.

That could be possible as I heard English talk on 1060 at one time with KYW off for antenna maintenance.

Dave,

Last night WLNO was blasting into Lansdale with KYW nulled. Pretty amazing since I'm only eight miles from their transmitter. They must be running day power.

Rene',
You may be right. I'll need to check early tomorrow to see if i can null KYW at all, as I'm maybe a mile or so from the Joshua Rd xmtr site. Bit tough with 125 kW ERP hitting you LOL....
