They way they're going they might as well have syndicated shows on all day. I don't get it.

More than likely it's a Judy Ellis dictate. Her hip-hop radio frame of reference is NYC (if it works there it will work anywhere), hence Wendy Williams, and now STAR & Bucwild.

I wish them luck, but I doubt the direction they're taking is the solution to their problems.

I dont think it is... WMPW will spin the format wheel.

Wendy Williams doesn't even sound like she's ever even been close to the south. I can't imagine many people in Memphis can relate with her.
I listened to her interview De La Soul last week and I had to turn it off.

At least Michael B. on 103.5 connects to the Demo a bit.
might at well put 98.9 on the bird full time and watch it float off into oblivion.

Two words describe the way to make a successful Hip Hop & R&B station in Memphis: GET LOCAL!

'Fraid I'm gonna have to shift my focus from 94.1 to 98.9 looking for the next format change. Entercom probably won't, they'll stick with the titanic given how much they invested in the morning show. Citadel otoh, while they spent 6 figures launching Power, won't hang with a loser forever. It ain't working and there's two other hip hop stations kicking serious A$$ in the market. 'Twas a DUMB move to go away from Smooth Jazz in the first place since the clientelle was all upscale with bucks to spend. I couldn't say that when I was in the building but it was one of those things everyone knew. Trouble is, what format can 98.9 go to? Same problem as 94.1, unless they're willing to dump $$ into a staff and do FM news talk I can't see anything that might work. Classical? (Well, it's different!)

Ditto for 103.5 - the station has its niche and syndication can only hurt WRBO. The one exception being Issac Hayes, since he's all Memphis so it might as well be local.<P ID="signature">______________

The main problem Smooth Jazz had on 98.9 was that it didn't have enough power to penetrate office buildings. That problem, I believe, has been solved. However, Citadel had NO OTHER Smooth Jazz stations and no experience with them; they decided to dump it rather than hire someone to make it go.

With a big enough stick, I believe Smooth Jazz can work here...
