Another tidbit on Seattle radio

I was listening to KZOK today and heard spots for KIRO 97.3. I thought it odd because KIRO is not a CBS station. Why would KZOK air an ad for a competing station from a different company? Is something going on here with KMCQ sale etc.

I was listening to KOMO tonight and heard Dave Ross introduce himself followed by a product endorsement. $$ is key, especially in these times

Wow, I've heard stations cross promote their sisters in the same group, and sometimes run ads for a station about to change format, but never a station running commercials for another station that could potentially take listeners away, even if it's for only a few minutes.

I'd argue bright radio people understand that audiences listen to multiple stations and have no risk in promoting a non-competitive format.

Interestingly when I sold TV back in the 80s...I had the same arguement with TV managers who said that running TV spots promoting radio would take audience away from TV. Once I overcame that ojection it only took three years for radio to become a top 5 category on our NBC station.

We all get too mono-maniacal about our own products...
