Another Top 40 outlet in Boston still a possibility?

With all of the discussion on the end of WBCN and the beginning of a new sports station, could another Top 40 signal work in Boston to go up against WXKS-FM and WJMN to take listeners from those two music stations? If so, who would do it if anyone?

Count on it. The station that will be on 104.1 will not be the "Mix" we currently know. It might (again might) still be called "Mix" but look for a change in their playlist.

the 2 major players are Entercom and Greater Media who could make a well funded effort to do it. I don't think anyone else has the deep pockets for promotion and waiting to build a brand that will make money. Anyone who does it is riskinng a long time, maybe never to make money.

Entercom isn't going to play with WAAf/WKAF, they stand to gain the most by BCN going away, 93.7 is doing well ratings and earnings wise for the price of a hard drive and an automation package.

Greater Media, as much as WTTK is languishing in 14th spot (IIRC), doesn't seem inclined to throw in the towel on talk, and WBOS is already going to benefit to some small degree when BCN flips. WBOS might get a subtle tweak, maybe some songs added, but like 93.7, 92.9 does well in ratings and billing for the cost of a hard drive and automation software.

WFNX? Poised to gain listeners from BCN, not that there were any listeners around, but they may pick up some.

It seems to me everyone is going to sit still until the economy and business turn around. It's not like we have a Citadel station that has nothing to lose by flipping, the major players ( CC, Entercom, Greater Media) can sit it out, CBS was the only one who with a 16th place station had nothing to lose and decided to roll the dice.

I still say that if WBZ-FM, "The Sports Hub" doesn't catch on the way that they hope, that within a year you could see them go CHR.

I would imagine a lot of these guys (or a majority of them) are signed to multi-year deals (I reckon Hardy's may be carried over from his time at BCN). Would CBS be willing to eat all of those contracts and start over if "The Sports Hub" isn't doing as well as they hoped? Is there a precedent for such a move? Or perhaps the hosts are on a "try out" basis...

Now I didn't consider that at all. I just think of the number of times stations flip within only a couple of months of warning or no warning at all like Star 93-7 did.

My one and only idea for now, is they should put on "The Brian McKnight Show" on weeknights. They should do that. That is my only idea for now, I have many more, but as I said before, no one ever listen to me and everyone always get mad at me when I say ideas. That's just my one and ONLY idea

I have another idea about this.

Since they are on a new dial setting, change their name to "Fresh 104.1" and as I said before, put "Brian McKnight Show" on weeknights. It can work here. Listen to his show when you have a free moment (ZTwins.com weeknights 7pm-Midnight ZTwins.com On the left, choose "1620am")

So, you want to fire an entire local staff including market staples like Lady D & Greg Daniels so that you can hear one show syndicated from who knows where? I'm not fond of that idea, at all. I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

well i in fact would love that idea because i am against mix 104 or whatever it is i think its soccer mom garbage radio!!!! they should have flipped mix with the move to a r&b station or something new. maybe cbs can sell it off and radio one can buy it and bring back hot 97.7 but on 104.1 or bring wbcn back!!!!!

The employees and advertisers who make millions from that station would disagree. Women 25-54 = free money.

don't put words in my mouth, I didn't say fire an entire staff, I just say ideas. Nothing to hurt no one.Just because you people don't like r&b music and r&b shows doesn't give you all the right to be so mean to everyone

You all watch, it's going to happen, someone will listen to me and take my ideas

Getting back on track....

Over at WXKS, they apparently know what they're doing, Kiss 108 sounds horrible and extremely cookie cutter lately (and have been for the last year or so), yet they're number one in the market. Other than Matt Seigel and Romeo, they have no one, just corny script readers that pretend they have personality. some random high school kid could do that, it doesn't take einstien to read a script and hit play. cookie cutter radio is taking the skill and fun out of being an fm disk jockey.

they had this lady shelly wade on the weekdays and i couldn't stand her. she sounded like she was talking to a 2 year old and had to be one of the biggest script readers i ever heard, at least they put some personality into it over at jam'n. don't listen to kiss much on the weekdays anymore because my new boss puts it on FNX but i think she's gone, she's off the website and rumor had it she was getting the boot.

they throw in syndicated ryan seacrest in the midday for crying out loud, alot of small market CHR's like WJYY do that, but for a major market CHR, it's a thing called cookie cutter.

>WBCN was our only hope.

How was WBCN our only hope when by all accounts they have spent the last 25 years getting more corporate and more boring?
