Another Upstate New York "News Central" About To Fold??

After Sinclair ended "News Central" newscasts in Rochester, announced plans to do so in Pittsburgh, and rumors that it is about to axe "News Central" in Milwaukee, the Buffalo News is reporting on speculation that Sinclair-owned WB affiliate WNYO-49 might likewise be about to pull the plug on it's version of "News Central", perhaps to be replaced by a newscast produced by another station in town. It won't be WIVB-4; they produce a 10 P.M. newscast for WNLO-23.

I believe that WGRZ-2 at one time produced a 10 P.M. newscast for the local Pax (now "i") affiliate, but looking at TV Titan.com listings, that partnership has (long since?) ended.

The article quoted a source at WNYO as saying that the station's staff had been informed that it wsasn't a matter of if, but when, the newscast goes off the air.

News Central is to news as to what the Titanic was to taking an ocean cruise.

I'm definitely not defending NewsCentral or saying it was good in any way. However, I'd still give them credit for at least TRYING it. Sometimes these ideas look good on paper, but you just don't know how they really work until you try... and I wonder how many ideas that COULD have been good, never had the chance to be tried because managers were too afraid to go outside the box.

On another note, I would say speculating that Buffalo will dump NewsCentral is a good bet... just like any other syndicated product, you need to have a certain number of affiliates to make it worth your while. If all these other big markets are dumping it, it may not even be an option for Buffalo to follow suit, so much as there may not BE a NewsCentral for them to carry after a certain point.

Interesting analogy. However, the Titanic was thought to be insinkable. Everyone knew NewsCentral was a disaster right from the start.
