Another West TN Radio personality passes

I was with the group that took the station over in 1983 (I think) and remember running UT-Martin basketball games on Saturdays. He would always keep you on your toes with the format and legal ID'S...Was he still doing the games? He had a good long run broadcasting! Is WKBJ -AM still on the air?
Kent

Does anyone know if this was the same Bill Haney who used to be an Elvis impersonator? I remember a Bill Haney who was an Elvis impersonator around west Tennessee about the time the real Elvis died. I never saw him or anything, but I remember the advertising and publicity. And Bill Haney was in his late '70s at the time of his death, so it is possible that he and the Elvis-impersonating Bill Haney might have been one and the same.

I seem to recall he started an FM station in Atwood not too many years ago, but this may be the same station as the Milan station some of you are referring to.

Go, Pacers, uh, I mean SKYHAWKS!!

WKBJ AM and FM were located at the tower site out in Milan. The FM changed calls to WYNU and the AM kept WKBJ. We broadcast both stations out of that small building for a wile then moved WYNU to Jackson in a plaza across from the mall. Not sure about the Elvis thing but could be.

...not the same guy as the Elvis tribute artist (as they are called today)....besides, I think that fella was named Bill "Haley" (could be wrong and proably am) and lived somewhere in Arkansas.

Very sorry to hear about Bill...he was a veteran old time broadcaster who had pretty much done it all. I remember him when he didn't have gray hair. I used to run across him every now and then broadcasting football games. The last time I heard him on the air was just over 2 years ago when he broadcast the Tennessee AA state championship baseball game.. I guess he was doing it for TRN. I used to marvel at how he could broadcast 3,4 or even 5 games in one day....

Rest in peace old buddy.

The BIG tower in Milan, on 79 as you come in from Humboldt on the right, belongs to WYNU.
It fell down went boom-boom in the early 90's. They went back even higher. It's one ofthe tallest towers in this part of the state at least. WYNU has a large coverage area.

Didm't that tower fall twice? Or was it another one in Jackson? AND come to think of it didn't Roger work for both stations when they fell?!?!? i'm not sayin..... ;)

WYNU may have the best signal outside of FM100 in West TN. Great signal. Froggy 104 (at that time Eagle 104) tower did fall in the Jackson tornado in 2002 I think. Not sure if there is anything to the Roger conspiracy but he does carry around a pair of bolt cutters wherever he goes along with his insurance papers. ;)

The tower in Milan only fell once.
It was (and IS) a very tall tower.
Pieces were buried DEEP into the ground.
Kinda cool really. My friend Jim Sykes was actually on the air when it went down...so Roger may have been free....Hmmmmmm!

Yes very sad. I worked with him at WTKB FM Milan/Atwood
