Another "WFAN History" article

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id...-fall-rise-first-all-sports-talk-station-wfan

This is an oral history one.

Also, for the 25th Anniversary, would it have killed WFAN to make some deals and do an "Old School Day" with Jim Lampley from 3-6 and Suzyn Waldman at the update desk?

You know, call in some favors with HBO Sports and the Yankees to get these two back for one day, and get Somers back on from midnight to 6am, and maybe broadcast a "Worst of Pete Franklin" inbetween.

I can't stand when radio/tv shows/stations have a big anniversary and don't do an "Old School" celebration like ESPN did for their 25th anniversary and bring back old talent to have them do the show and push the current talent to the side for a day or two.

Lampley was a guest on Mike Francesa's 6-hour anniversary show on Fri. 6/29/12 and I'm pretty sure that Waldman was on as well.

Likely it was FAN management's decision to get as many people onto Francesa's show (which was packed with guests) rather than have the same guests buried on weekend shows. They did indeed have weekend shows, mostly on Sun. 7/1 with hosts who (for the most part) didn't appear on Friday's Francesa extravaganza. In order to get as many different people on-air, most of the shows were one-to-two hours in length.

Possibly Lampley was not available for the weekend - and Suzyn's working almost every day trying to make sense of John Sterling's somewhat increasing mis-calls on Yankees baseball broadcasts.

Lampley did a one-hour show on the station's 20th Anniversary in 2007 - pretty sure that Waldman also got some time.
Those shows did happen to fall on a weekend (Sat.-Sun. 6/30-7/1/07) as this year's did.
