Another WHAMer is Gone

Remember, Less is More.

BTW, we're not talking about service to the listener. We're talking about payroll vs. profit.

While we're (somewhat) on the topic, I notice now that WHAM is running Fox Network news at the top of the hour followed by a local headline update DURING WEEKDAY DAYPARTS,...not just overnight.
Admittedly I don't listen to WHAM much any more, so perhaps this is old news??

Barry was not let go from WHAM. Traffic was eliminated Barry will probably be moved to another position in the company; i.e. producer of the Lonsberry show.

Yes, they are running Fox News on the hour. I noticed it on Monday. I thought it was a mistake or just someone didn't show up to do the news. Well, there goes the last credibilty WHAM had. Fox News may be a lot of things but fair & balanced it ain't. Wonder if they are doing it on Clear Channel other news talkers -WSYR, WGY?

That's not what Barry recently told someone. He said he was leaving WHAM to pursue other business ventures that he's involved in. As for Clear Channel offering him another job, it sounds like the same promise made to those who were let go late last year. The only person ending up remaining with Clear Channel is Mike DiGiorgio, who is now working for Channel 13.
As for FOX being on WHAM that is old news. It was announced, I believe early last year, that Clear Channel was going to dump CBS news (or other network news on their other radio stations) for FOX.
Considering that WHAM is trying to keep its right-wing audience happy why not go to FOX?
And you're correct about FOX’s claim of being fair and balanced when it comes to reporting news. That’s like Ted Kennedy becoming a life member of the NRA.

Glad I passed on doing traffic for ClearChannel after all. Being "downsized" twice in one year may have pushed me over the edge :D

Yes you are fortunate for not accepting that position at WHAM. What I don't understand is how a station that bills itself as the "News Leader" can eliminate two full time reporters, a talk show producer and now traffic and still claim that mantle? At the rate things are going eventually there will be no local radio news in Rochester in the near future. Instead it will be just people either re-writing from the local newspaper, reading AP wire copy or depending on TV news sound bytes.

It could well be said that "the future is now"......, which , come to think of it, is rather well said, ...wouldn't you say?

WHAM definitely did not dump traffic. In fact, they sell traffic services to other stations, such as WXXI.

WHAM has a new traffic reporter, Cathy Dunman, on in the morning and another new voice on during pm drive time.

Both Clear Channel and Entercom offer traffic reports to a number of radio stations. I find it somewhat ironic that WXXI is paying WHAM for their traffic reports. After all WHAM's Bob Lonsberry has been such a vocal critic of public radio for years. Now the company he's working for is getting revenue from XXI.

If memory serves me correct WXXI did not pay cash for their traffic reports when Metro Traffic was providing such a service. Instead we (or should I say "they") ran underwriting spots.

I have no idea if that's the same arraignment now between WXXI and Clear Channel.

And considering the animosity that existed between WHAM against public broadcasting, (even though most of their staff listens to public radio) I am surprised that WXXI didn’t sign up with Entercom’s traffic network.

Oh well some things never change I guess.

WHAM (and all of Clear Channel Rochester)'s traffic is now based out of Syracuse. Hence the "new reporter."

when did they switch that over? After we all got cut loose, Metro Buffalo took over some of the affiliates, with Kate McLean working part-time inhouse at CBS for the rest.

What's the deal with Syracuse?

I wish someone could explain to me the fixation that Clear Channel and Time Warner has with Syracuse. Not that I am knocking Syracuse, but first R-News has its weather operation located in Syracuse and now I read that Clear Channel's traffic center is located in that city. Even before Clear Channel purchased Channel 13, Ackerly had the master control center from moved from Henrietta to Syracuse.

Population-wise Rochester is the third largest city in New York State and could surpass Buffalo in a few years, yet more and more so-called local news and weather operations seem to operate out of another city.

I am not trying to be a smart-ass here, but asking an honest question. Why Syracuse?

It'll be interesting to see if the new traffic reporters in Syracuse will acclimate to all the "unique" Rochester street pronunciations...something tells me "NO".

What's the real difference?

Uh...Mark? In terms of you last comment (most of WHAM staff listens to public radio) ...NOTHING could be further from the truth. Sorry.

For a group that supposedly didn't listen to WXXI these people certainly monitored WXXI's newscasts and were familiar with what talk show host Bob Smith had to say. Now if that's not people monitoring another radio station, I don't know what is. Besides I was told by a number of friends at WHAM that they listened to XXI. So maybe you didn't but others did.

Mark,
I'm sorry if this hurts your feelings, but as the old saying goes...sometimes the truth hurts.
So here it is:

I worked in that newsroom for 10 years...and not all that long ago.
In that entire time I NEVER witnessed anyone monitoring WXXI....NOT ONCE
You may find that hard to believe, but it's the god's honest truth.
Sorry to say, but we just didn't care about what you guys were reporting and didn't really think anyone else did either considering we had like, what....13 times the number of listeners?
Again, not to put you down or anything,..or sully the efforts of the WXXI news staff (who i thought were a nice bunch of people)...but, truthfully, the feeling regarding WXXI in the WHAM newsroom could be summed up in one word.
Irrelevant.
